New climate study raises alarm for Asian Megacities

A new study that takes into account the effects of both climate change and normal oceanic variations predicts that by 2100, some of Asia’s major cities may be submerged.

Sea levels have already been rising as a result of rising ocean temperatures and record-breaking glacier melting brought on by climate change.

Yet, a study that was released in the journal Nature Climate Change provides new information as well as dire warnings about the potential consequences for millions of people.

The study contends that earlier analyses overestimated the rate of sea level rise and subsequent flooding brought on by natural ocean variations, despite the fact that many Asian megacities along the coast were already at risk of flooding.

Hasn't this been known for some time..... particularly Bangkok, Dhaka, Jakarta, happening outside Asia too, Lagos, Venice....

What a load of propaganda!! It's well known that mega cities like Bangkok are at risk of subsidence. Sea level rise is trivial compared to the rate of subsidence.

More silliness from the doom & gloom, distraction, we need your tax dollars to save you, politicians/elite.

3.4mm per year X 77 year = 262mm = 26cm

We're all doomed, IF it happens.

We''re <4 kms from the surf @ 23.7m above sea level

so we still won't be beachfront ... krap

With that info:

Yes it's been known for decades and the problem has been willfully ignored by the right for just as long. Ignorance funded by fossil fuel pseudoscience.

If you can't see it and touch it, it doesn't exist, right? Sea level rise is measured in mm per year but still has a dramatic effect.

"Sea level rise is trivial"! Tell that to the islanders of archipelagos in the Solomon Sea and other areas in the South Western Pacific.

Straight out of the Trump handbook on climate change denial.

Well for all the rhetoric, global meetings, new green business technologies designed and implemented, new energy policies, tax incentives, human populations increasing etc... it does not seem to stop the polar caps melting, heat increasing.

Someone and some groups are making bank.

True, fossil fuel companies are making record profits this year.

I'll worry when the rich folks and politicians stop buying the beachfront property, and start buying property a few miles inland cuz thats where the new coastline will be.

after harping about climate change, and its impending devastating effects for 8 years, the first thing B.H. Obama did after getting out of office was buy a $12 million dollar beach front estate on marthas vineyard

And London and strange as it is they are all still here, infact you can get 30 year plus mortgages... Ha ha ha Banks are so stupid  the world is about to end or is it the Sheeple who spout this cult nonsense? Hasn't it been 7 plus mad predictions by people like gore (who flies around on his private jet making millions a year from talking climate cult). The panic this man has caused to millions: Great lakes dry! No highest level ever recorded, No ice caps (some decrease and some increas as have done for millions of years), poor bears gone yet highest populations since records began infact so high they are starting to cross mate with Great Brown bears. Not on prediction has come true.

We will resort to science, if the Dutch can do it, so can London.

I can't afford a London mortgage!

Do a little research, some decrease and some increase every year however the total area remains constant and sometimes increases but photos are managed and posted of certain areas to give the effect they want, data is picked to promote their agenda. It would have more credence if they picked one date in time for all aspects. The west's model is flawed however the Russian model is far more accurate.  (Note I'm not a Russian fan boy).

Not many can and local born have no chance or even much desire to live there and opted to sell making a killing and buy further north. The fact that the uk doesn't have major costal defences being built should wake people up to the scam. The fact that mortgages are rising and not crashing around the coastal beach front property also should wake people up.

I guess to you that's proof that sea level rise isn't happening or isn't a problem?

By the way, Obama's sea front property is about ten feet above sea level. Facts matter. That means it will about about three centuries at the current rates of sea level rise before it becomes a problem. Your gotcha moment is a furphy.

To say that it's not the end of the world is not to say it isn't a problem.

Given that most cities and arable land lie near the sea it's definitely a problem and that problem needs to be fixed before a tipping point arrives in the very near future. Scientists know there's only one viable solution to the problem and it isn't building sea walls.

If war didn't exist the military would be out of a job. If cancer didn't exist, many doctors would be out of a job. Your point?

Govt and people stop all wars and get on with each other, military budget diverted to and allocated to medicine and doctors scientists find a quick cure  for all human ailments then countries will be awash with money which could be distributed to us.

Global warming cult sponsored by the people from the Trump derangement syndrome. What nonsense, the earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years.

Yes, I quite agree with you. There is ample evidence that there has been cyclic warming and cooling of planet Earth over millions of years.

But this time it's different. The most destructive animal on mother Earth is giving it a great big shove in the wrong direction. And it's the only planet we have so it's time mankind got a grip.

Listen to Greta, not that idiot Trump!

And if a permanent solution to climate change is effected and made law then the climate change agencies will see their funds reallocated. Nobody is pushing back against this despite the right wing talking points.

He also bought a beachfront property in Hawaii that is already having major problems with erosion.
