Gary Lineker has been told to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use, the BBC has said.

It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.

The BBC said it considered Lineker's "recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines".

Alan Shearer joins Ian Wright in pulling out of Match of the Day - reaction as Gary Lineker steps back

Alan Shearer has joined Ian Wright in saying he will not appear on Match of the Day tomorrow, after Gary Lineker was forced off the programme.

Alan Shearer simply said on Twitter: "I have informed the BBC that I won't be appearing on MOTD tomorrow night."

Wright had tweeted earlier: "Everybody knows what Match of the Day means to me, but I've told the BBC I won't be doing it tomorrow. Solidarity."

Good.

Linekar isn't above the rules. Everyone knows everyone at the BBC is a left wing Labour voter (and if they're not, they soon become one if they wish to keep their job) but as a publicly funded organization they need to display impartiality.

Maitlis was a disgrace and now Linekar has taken over the virtue signaling duties. Hopefully he is sacked for constantly breaking his employment contract.

Just because you're so deluded that you think you have the moral high ground, doesn't mean the rules do not apply to you.

The BBC loves diversity, except of course diversity of opinion.

Lineker broke them, according to the BBC themselves.

Comparing the government to 1930's Nazi Germany is hardly impartial.

No he didn't. .. see words like impartial are subjective anyway and can't be part of a contract. You are just making assumptions. I bet you thought Jeremy Clarkson was misunderstood???

Lineker is looking at the facts and making a rational observation.... that's far from impartial

Arguably your most illogical posts for a long time.

Let’s take it apart:

Everyone knows everyone at the BBC is a left wing Labour voter (and if they're not, they soon become one if they wish to keep their job)

I doubt everyone knows anything of the sort, if your statement is true then, this becomes a problem:

“The BBC loves diversity, except of course diversity of opinion.

The BBC response to Lineker’s comments on social media with respect to Government Immigration policy (actual events AKA ‘reality’) indicate you are wrong in your first assertion and doubly wrong in your second.

Clearly Lineker is being censored for expressing views that are not inline with the extremism that has a grip of the Tory Party.

And he wasn’t making those remarks on the BBC, nor do they have any bearing on his role as a sports presenter.

Cancel culture right there, and the rightwing baying for it.

The word "impartial" is indeed included in the BBC contracts and it also includes when they aren't actually working for the BBC and are speaking publicly on other mediums

Firstly the BBC has to say they have cause to censor Lineker, there may or may not be rules but their statement is one side of the coin, it doesn’t make it true.

Censoring people for speaking up against the Government…. Now what was that about 1930s Germany?

You can't tax people for a broadcast under the threat of jail and then use the platform to push political agendas.

If he wants to be a political activist he is free to get another job.

Not impartial or in any way reasonable, just hysterical. In the 1930's people were leaving Nazi Germany, today the UK is being invaded by illegal immigrants. Hardly a sensible comparison. All we are trying to do is stop them.

That's what happens when a corrupt government is allowed to appoint a right wing Tory stooge to run public broadcasting. But there you have it - siding with the UN refugee agency is no longer allowed if you want to keep your job.

When Andrew Neil was a senior political journalist at the BBC he regularly opined on Twitter without consequence. That he tended to side with the Nasty party was entirety coincidental of course...

Nothing to do with anybody’s taxes.

Invaded you say.

Do you have any evidence that Andrew Neil made politically biased tweets or is this just something you have heard and presumed to be true due to your own biases?

Although you aren't being truthful .

He didn't "side with UN refugee agency" , he likened the U.K Government to Nazi Germany  ,

This is what he actually said:

“An immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s.””

He didn’t liken the UK Government to Nazi Germany, he remarked that “ in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s.

The response, censor Lineker.

I mean we can’t have people criticizing the language the Government chooses to use can we.

I don't know Lineker from a bar of soap but I think it is not totally unreasonable for high profile media personalities to be asked to limit expressing their private opinions on highly contentious issues. If I was boss I would limit it to those in the newsroom though, and not limit the ability of other hosts or entertainers such as those relating to soccer shows, to have their say.
