Gold Master kiosks

There are “Gold Master” kiosks in few select malls in Thailand that sell 99.9% gold items. Their prices are primarily the gold weight as in typical 96.5 % gold shops.  There is a comment on their FB page that states their pieces don’t hold value. The commenter said he was offered 50% his purchase price. I’m just curious how that could be as long as the gold weight is the majority of the price? I can understand losing 100% on the design markup.
