webfact Posted April 9, 2023 Posted April 9, 2023 A number of Chiang Mai’s residents have taken to social media to post sarcastic comments about the continuing air pollution, in desperation over government’s failure to address the problem. One such comment reads “We will select and burn only quality dried leaves. There is smoke from the forest fires in the northern mountains mixed with smoke from maize waste. They are burn during the break from the threat from weed-killing chemicals. You can be sure that every grain of the super fine PM2.5 will reach your nose and get into your lungs. Hurry up, the dried leaves will run out soon.” The other comment, from Dr Rungsrit Kanjanavanit, an oncology specialist at the Faculty of Medicine of Chiang Mai University, reads “Chiang Mai, every breath is an adventure. It is crazy today, an unliveable place.” Full story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/chiang-mai-residents-turn-to-sarcasm-in-desperation-over-pm2-5-pollution/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-04-10 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Every concerned CM citizen that is sick and tired of choking to death every day should march and sit outside the governors office. Shame the utterly useless man into doing something or pack up and retire. 7 4 2

Fine Mother NATURE for not providing enough wind and rain to move the air around to lessen the impact. Enforcement as we all know is almost non-existent in all these countries when you have done that relocate Chiang Mai to a hilltop where winds clow all the time and the smog will not sit as it does in the valley currently . There simple .....!!! 2 1 1
Popular Post rwill Posted April 10, 2023 Popular Post Posted April 10, 2023 Burning is a way of life here. Even those complaining are still probably burning refuse in their yards. 3 3
Popular Post koolkarl Posted April 10, 2023 Popular Post Posted April 10, 2023 Social media accomplishes nothing. Serious demonstrations will. It is hard to believe how docile people can be when this cancer causing air is killing them, their kids and pets, 24/7. Wake up! Already the news that Chiang Mai is the most polluted city in the world has been on Al Jazeera, BBC and a German tv station so far to my knowledge. I hope that tourists don't come here for years to teach these politicians a lesson. 6

mrfill Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 This escalation should be suppressed or it could lead to an outbreak of cynicism. Scary 1 1
Popular Post Tarteso Posted April 10, 2023 Popular Post Posted April 10, 2023 Stop tourism in Northern Thailand and let the Thais breathe their air, (both; the rulers and the lighter-wielding farmers). I just moved to the coast after 10 years living in the hell. Family happy with the new and healthier life. ???? 3

Blaming other countries burning in a regional geography where wind is non existent seems to be a major contradiction… CM smoke is all home generated and topography confirms it… Hang ‘em and hang ‘em high! 3 2 3

For reference from today's Khmer media (10 April 2023):- Interestingly Cambodia was not included so I assume the country does not contribute to Thailand's air pollution. Thailand on Friday called for efforts to create constructive and concrete approaches to tackle the region’s transboundary haze problem. This came as Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha hosted an online trilateral meeting Friday with Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and Myanmar Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501270363/thailand-seeks-regional-cooperation-to-tackle-haze-problem/

Just before COVID I flew to Siem Reap during the smokey season, it was way less polluted than Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Cycling around SanSai earlier this week, plenty of forest fires to cycle past. Every morning when I open the doors i can smell the wood smoke. Thailand is the only country responsible for the pollution in Thailand. All this 'other countries are causing the pollution' is just lies. No Thai will accept responsibility for the problems they cause, it's always someone else's fault! 2 1 3

cncltd1973 Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 your government heard you and will make thailand a wellness destination, problem solved
oustaristocrats Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 Yes, I would expect the Thai people know in the meantime whom not to vote for next month :) Assume they understand these problem are linked to the man in office and his inner circle.

While Thailand certainly contributes to the pollution, it is by far not the worst offender in the region. A quick look at the fire map from the past 24 hours shows pretty clearly that burring is entirely unchecked in neighboring countries,https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/map/#t:adv;d:2023-04-10;@104.9,15.2,6z Thailand is certainly guilty of not stopping the fires dead within their own borders, but really, how big a difference will that make without regional cooperation?

Sweet Swede Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 When they don't go after culprits this will never end. The authorities spend millions on extinguishing the fires but kiss the ass of the igniters. Pathetic.
Hervey Bay Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 There seems to be debate about whether the smoke is caused locally or by neighbouring countries. The answer is simple : There is a constant background level caused by other countries. Then that is made far worse by local burning and the topography of Chiang Mai. Cut out the local burning and things will be much better, as evidenced by people who say they have gone elsewhere in the region and it has been not been nearly so bad.
tandor Posted April 11, 2023 Posted April 11, 2023 i bet the Headline will be the same 2024-5-6-7 into oblivion
Stargeezr Posted April 11, 2023 Posted April 11, 2023 My solution is just do not go to Northern Thailand during the smoky season. Plenty of other times where the air is much better. I would stay in Hua Hin and enjoy the ocean air until the smoke has left the northern parts. Problem solved. Well at least for me.
