Hi guys,

Another question.

Received a new passport as my old one is only valid until end of may. Same day, my Non-immigrant OA also expires.
Should I go first go to immigration and transfer visa from old to new passport or can this be done on the same day.

If I am not wrong, Non O-A renewal can be processed 6 weeks before expiry.

Can transfer of visa from old to new passport and renewal of O-A be done on the same day.

Thanks

Pretty sure the transfer of stamps etc is done at the extension desks (L desks) so you can make an appointment for extension and they will do it same desk.

This is how I remember it several years ago, in 2019. Had renewed passport as extension was due, got extension/stamp transfer done by the same IO at the "L" desk in Chaeng Wattana at the same time.

I did my passport change just two days ago.  The only thing that caught me out was I need a copy of every page of the old passport.  Straightforward and no fee.  Ten years ago 200 baht was asked for.

Had stamps transferred to a new passport 3 months ago here in Chiangmai.  Besides a copy of the new passport photo page and a filled-out "Transfer Stamp to New Passport Form", they also wanted a copy of every page of the old passport (in my case, every page including stamps from other countries).  Was quick and easy and there was no fee.

You can have Stamps transferred same visit as obtaining extension.

I am expecting a new Australian passport early/mid May '23.

My Non-Immigrant 'O' visa extension based on retirement is due to be renewed 20 October 2023 at the Jomtien Immigration Office.  IIRC, the officers at counter #8 are in charge for renewal of visa extensions. I generally apply for a new extension 4 weeks before due date.

Considering the time span, is it advisable for having the relevant visa details transferred from the cancelled passport to the new one before applying for a new extension and, if so, which is the appropriate counter to go to and what paperwork/form needs to be completed?

Or is it okay to wait (4 months) until 20 September '23 requesting the immigration officer at counter #8 to transfer the visa details from cancelled to new p/port at the same time when submitting my application for a new visa extension.

@CapraIbex

First up there is no time limit apart from doing the transfer of stamps prior to immigration doing the extension.

Can be done on same visit.

However in the past sometimes Jomtien made you come back at certain time such as "come back after 3pm" or " come back tomorrow"

My advice would be to do the transfer early doors as to not complicate the extension process.

Thanks Dr Jack,

I'll be guided accordingly.

Don't forget letter from embassy, if your embassy provides one.

What about if you got your new passport in your country and not at your embassy in Bangkok ? I your country they will not give you any letter.

Pretty sure only required if you obtain pp renewal in Thailand.

I'm sure reading somewhere in this forum that the Australian Embassy in Bangkok don't issue a 'letter' anymore - they now will stamp one of the (new) passport pages requesting the Immigration office to transfer relevant visa details from the cancelled passport to the new one. Can you confirm this, please.

That is correct.

That is basically what I have posted in earlier threads.

No sure when they stopped.

There is current thread just started now stating that USA will also stop providing the letter.

Unrelated but be aware that Oz embassy in Bangkok also do not provide letter that can be used in lieu of certificate of residence.

The Aus embassy no longer issues these letters.

It certainly was not known by the IO 12 months ago.

Has it now been understood?????????

The immigration office/officer was wrong.

Oz embassy has not issued letter for several years.

I renewed my Aus passport in 2016 at the embassy and received a stamp in the passport.  I had to complete the details when my new passport arrived.

Correct. But not sure if IO's know this.

They love to see a letter which they can immediately photocopy 3 times and ask you to sign.????????

I took my new passport and old passport with the stamp in it to Chiang Rai in 2016 and they had no problem transferring the details over.

Yes. Totally agreed. But who is going to win any discussion/argument that arises in a IO? Certainly not you or me.

Treated as criminals every year.????????

Yup. As I say, it all depends on the day.

I always attend sober, dressed well and am polite.

But they just make the rules up.

First issue/problems in 10 years.

Guess he had a bad day.

Never take anything for granted at the IO.????????

Sadly often that's true.

I'm Oz and embassy will not be providing "letter".

I am obtaining new pp this year.

This link has a form that I will take along as a back up.

It's #22 on the immigration list of forms

https://www.immigration.go.th/en/?page_id=3202

Don't forget to photograph/or photocopy the Embassy receipt.

It may or may not help.????????

You will have an arrival stamp in your new passport, all that is needed.
