IRS removes ‘entire investigative team’ in Hunter Biden probe, whistleblower claims retaliation: report

The IRS has removed the "entire investigative team" from its multi-year tax fraud investigation of Hunter Biden, and a whistleblower who raised concerns about the handling of the case is claiming the move was "clearly retaliatory," according to a Monday report. 

Per The New York Post, the whistleblower’s attorneys told Congress that the removal was on the order of the Department of Justice.

This is a different Whistleblower not to be confused with missing ones,that has come forward in April , first time its been reported on here , I think .He had his lawyer contact both the dems and gop houses .He has accused people in the Doj of a cover up in investigating tax fraud of HB. 
“Can you commit that there will be no retaliation against that whistleblower?” Smith asked Werfel.

“Mr. Chairman, while I can’t comment on a specific case, I can say without any hesitation there will be no retaliation for anyone making an allegation or a call to a whistleblower hotline,” the IRS commissioner replied.

“Shapley was assigned to supervise the investigation in January 2020 and said over the summer, he grew concerned at how he saw the Justice Department treating the case and certain measures being used to seemingly shield the first son”.

He said the final straw came following a “charged meeting” with Justice Department officials in October 2022 that ended with him and his team being removed from the investigation after years of work”.

One of the big problems with IRS agents second guessing the Justice Dept is that they generally haven't a clue about what it takes to win a criminal case of tax evasion.

 

"Proof of the crime requires first proving the attendant circumstance that an unpaid tax liability exists.  Second, the prosecution must prove some affirmative act by the defendant to evade or attempt to evade a tax.  Third, prosecutors most show that the defendant possessed the specific intent to evade a known legal duty to pay.  To convict, the jury must find the defendant guilty of each of these elements beyond a reasonable doubt. "

This was a  time, as right wingers gleefully point out, that Biden was addicted to crack. He could also invoke personal trauma due to the death of his brother. And his long time accountant had died. Given that his personal situation was chaotic, it's not going to be easy to prove all 3 elements beyond a reasonable doubt.
