Is this election a new dawn for Thailand?

On May 15, Thailand woke up to a new dawn. 9-Years after Prayut Chan-ocha conducted a coup d’etat to oust Yingluck Shinawatra’s government, the electoral landslide by the opposition parties in the latest General Election appears to put Thailand back on a path to democracy. After a decade of hopelessness, Thailand welcomes back the long lost sense of hope, aspiration and optimism.

Spearheading this change is undoubtedly Move Forward. The party’s growing popularity is not a surprise. Strong showings in the Censure Debates has clearly demonstrated the party’s competence and commitment to human rights and democratic values. However, the party shocked everyone (and probably themselves) by winning the entire General Election, beating the old serial champion like Pheu Thai Party in the process.

After winning five consecutive General Elections, Pheu Thai is suffering its first defeat since its founding days in 2001 by Thaksin Shinawatra. It is an incredible accomplishment by Move Forward, considering that the “experienced” politicians from the Democrat and Palang Pracharat Party tried and failed for over two decades. Move Forward (and its predecessor Future Forward) is no longer just a political disruptor, but a full-fledged political force to be reckoned with.

Not a lot will change until they remove all the military from the senate and move forward with a true democracy

  • Things will stay the same in Thailand. Anyone who believe otherwise can go do their immigration extension at 7/11

Knocking Thaksin off his perch is a tremendous accomplishment. The idiot Yellows will soon be dreaming of the days under Thaksin as move Forward begins implementing policies far far more progressive than anything Thaksin ever dared (or wanted). They’re going to be wishing they stuck with the devil they knew.

No before Covid it was running well....and what self censoring, there is exactly one topic that can not be discussed and no one really cares in their normal life. That is a very small left wing and right wing bubble everyone else cares about the important things in life.

Not soon....they talk already that PTP should make the government and Thaksin can come home and get pardoned if he keep MF out of government....so that came much faster than you thought. And it is not so stupid, it would be some middle ground.

A new dawn.

One or two "new dawns" are great. More than that? Maybe not.

Nonsense.

PTP have issued a statement they are 100% behind MF.

Your junta fantasies are just that - fantasies.

Surely for a guy rooting in Pattaya it shouldn't really matter. And if you want the change it will just get worse for sexpat as women get more education and things become more expensive. Off to Flipinz u go?

the significance of this election cannot be overstated.

sure, we shouldn't expect many things to change quickly, but the symbolic meaning is that old corrupt systems (i.e. yellow and red) were voted out.

another thought I had was that this evolution would probably not have been possible without the previous coup.

MFP has a lot of work to do, and must do it cleverly and skilfully.

the old systems are still around and won't let it go too easily.

Even now those protestors got their own elected party, most of these young gen demands are still fantasy anyway. They all think to get minimum wage to 700 baht right away too, some even say 1000 baht. Yet they work just as slow as always, nothing from their side improved.

Imagine for some crazy reason they actually do make it happen, it would make Thailand even more expensive than it already is today (near being over priced for many things).

Personally I do not care that much at all, I do know that it was very stable and calm here in general, under the army. That is good if wanting to attract business too.

Liberty before Prosperity.

ALWAYS!

A new dawn, a new day or deja vu?

Pita was born on 5 September 1980. He is the nephew of Padung Limjaroenrat, a former secretary to the Interior Minister and a close aide of then Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

(but at least when Thaksin appointed his relatives to head both army and police he was elected)
Seems new PM or proxy in waiting Pita/Tim may be a bit controlling as well:

“We broke up because of accumulating conflict,” Chutima said when asked about her broken romance during the Club Friday Show on GMM25. “He grew jealous when I played a role which involved holding hands. After that, more rules emerged, including one that banned me from coming home later than 6pm. Not even business appointments were exempt.”

Certainly Thailand needs a change, hopefully Tim's the real deal.

It's as much a "new dawn" as any of the previous elections were.

I noticed this plank in the MF party platform

“The party's main policies aim to demilitarise, decentralise, and de-monopolise Thailand.

It also wants to reform the royal defamation law, end mandatory military conscription, and hold a referendum to prevent any future military dictatorships.”

That would appear to open the door for another coup and doom the party to a very short life.

A new dawn for many reasons. The big win by MFP, record voters turn-out, significant political shift, upsetting Pheu Thai, the dissatisfaction of the military dominance, voters desire for change, youths coming out in numbers against a backdrop of ultra conservatives that still hold power. Would this be a Widodo moment when he emerged from Indonesia dominated by military elites to become inspirational President. I certainly hope so after 2 decades of lost economic opportunities and rising inequalities.

It may be.......Or it may not

We have yet to see what happens with the Junta in disguise as 250 BS senators with a vote they do not deserve

Let's hope all goes well but TIT

I have quite enjoyed it. Building my house here, going on holiday to UK, Italy and Dubai a few times, having my lovely Thai girl partner, her daughter producing a lovely boy,

No problems at all at Immigration for Retirement Extension using the Combination Method ie Bht 400k in the bank and Bht 40k a month from Wise which is plenty to live on.

Horrendous..........rubbish.

A time of progressivism and freedom of speech is truly approaching.

Soon, foreigners will be free to openly and publicly criticise Thailand and Thai people with no fear of any kind of consequences.

An Ostrich would say the same.

OK, I am happy it was horrendous for you. Please quote me some of the things which have ruined it for you personally.

I am quite happy, ostrich or not.

Criticism of all kids is a fundamental pillar of Democracy.
