Thailand’s Tourist Police have banned sex workers from selling services on the beach in Pattaya.

Last night, Tourist Police and officers from Pattaya City Police Station headed down to Pattaya Beach and instructed the city’s ladies and ladyboys of the night to move along.

The police informed the sex workers that from now on, they are no longer permitted to stand along the beachfront to sell sex services to tourists, reports KhaoSod. If the police find them working there again, they will face heavy fines, warned Pol. Col. Somchai Thiraphatphaisarn.

The sex workers were never really permitted to find clientele at the beach since all prostitution is illegal in Thailand. However, the law is actively ignored and rarely enforced in Pattaya – famously the sex capital of the world.

Pol. Col. Somchai said the crackdown on beachfront prostitution followed orders from deputy police chief Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn to be more rigorous in preventing crimes against tourists.

They are mostly just people trying to make money to support their families.

I guess even if they do nothing wrong, they're still prostitutes looking for customers, which not everyone likes to see.

Similar with drug dealers.  They might be perfectly nice people, and perhaps no fuss or harm is caused, but they're still drug dealers and people don't really want to see a load of them congregating everywhere.

I suppose it's the associated atmosphere of criminality and vice in a place that they would rather have a "family image".

T spoon had a song Sex on the beach and there is even a cocktail.. Is this cocktail also forbidden now??

Strange for a city that have no prostitutes, as they have checked many times already, it must be the cocktails than that are being sold

For the next 1-2 weeks anyway.

You are overly optimistic. From my experience there are always articles in the news that this and that will change but in reality nothing really changes. There have been problems on the Beach Road for very, very many years. And suddenly it should be different. Why now? Why not years ago? There were articles in the news years ago already that it will be different in the future. But this future never came.

Harrassing people and passing on stds.

They don't harass people, have you been there?

Remember the girls are just trying to feed their families, so now no food on the table and rent anxiety.

Beach road girls never harass people when walking by, bar girls on the other hand don't stop

So beach =not allowed

But on the street is ok

Got it

Pity, as I got used to the feel of send on my bum, now that selling sex on the beach is not allowed,

Can the police tell where IT IS allowed?

I think he went once and couldn't handle the realness of the place so fled to the dullness and safety of a one horse town where nothing bad ever happens because 'normal' Thais are angels ????

Probably not even that far......

I have not found the ladies to be harassing in any way, they are just there looking at their phones. The LBs have more of a reputation for harassing, even attempting to lay hands upon you. I suspect it is their actions that have brought this about, but it seems rather wide ranging if to address that problem. It is a particular segment that needs to be focused upon, and many incidents occur off Beach Rd anyhow,

They will be back!

That's geography, not a solution.

STD's are only passed on when sex occurs without condoms. Anyone that stupid should be disqualified from adding to the gene pool.

"They" have been there ever since I can remember (30 years). I'm a big Pattaya lover and I'm living here on permanent basis for 26 years.

But admittedly, I'm ashamed of the city, every occasional stroll I make on beach road, to see those street hookers there. It completely degrades the image of town. And funny enough, take the same walk on Jomtien beach road, and you will find NO hookers there... So, it IS possible.

Yes, it would be a good thing to get completely rid of them, and simultaneously all of these freaks that come to beach road BECAUSE of them.

Banning prostitution is like banning the common cold.
