A Russian woman sustained minor injuries on Wednesday when a thief on a motorbike snatched her bag and knocked her down in Bangkok, Thailand.

Yesterday, Natasia Kotawa of Russian nationality travelled to Thong Lor Police Station in Bangkok to report being a victim of a robbery on Wednesday night.

At 11pm, Natasia walked to a convenience store on Sukhumvit Soi 39 and was walking back to her condo when an assailant riding a yellow motorbike suddenly snatched her shoulder bag, knocking her to the ground, along Soi Promsri 2, Sukhumvit 49/13, reports KhaoSod.

The victim sustained injuries to both knees as well as bruises and scrapes on her hands, arms, torso, and face and was left wrapped up in gauze.

The thief escaped with several of Natasia’s valuable belongings including an iPhone 14, a lilac MacBook Pro laptop, AirPods, a blue purse, and around 1,000 baht in cash.

Nice police work

Quote

Police tracked the GPS signal of the victim’s AirPods to Soi Yu Suk 30 in the Mueang district of Samut Prakan province, just south of Bangkok, and followed the signal.

As soon as police arrived at the Soi Yu Suk 30 they met a man riding a yellow Honda Scoopy motorbike with a Samut Prakan registration. Both the man and bike matched the CCTV images.

It seems to me that lots of crimes are not reported in the media. That gives many people the idea nothing happens.

Depends on your accommodations.

Don't think I'd stay at a place I can't leave my laptop.

That this is even "news" shows what a safe city BKK is. Sure there's petty crime, lawlessness and corruption. But name me one city in the west where you can routinely leave your helmet sitting on your motorcycle and expect it to be there when you come back.

That depends on the helmet.   I know more than a few people who had their helmets taken.

I only locked mine because I'm a hard fit and it cost more than 200 baht.

This country is so safe, most have walls around their houses and bars on the windows and doors ... Open your eyes.

Where I live I don't even lock the doors. If the wall and the fake security cameras don't deter them, they're coming in anyway at least this way, they won't break a window or door.

I find it impressive how quick the police jump on the case and get it solved. Seems to be done almost within 24 hours of the crime being reported. Well done boys and girls.

I propose a new law that the perps are not released on bail until they pay all the foreigner hospital bills !

Interesting - how does one do that?

Yes, it seems that when a foreigner is involved it gets more attention?

Safer in condo than walking on the street given the hour…

People just like to talk nonsense about some western countries probably to justify their miserable existence here. There is about 10 times more violent crime in Thailand than in Canada and that is undeniable fact.

Yes, there is crime everywhere, and common sense helps minimize being a victim of.  For the scooter bag snatcher, simply hanging your bag on the shoulder not facing traffic can be all the deterrent needed.

Tracking device and return of her belongings is a nice end to the story.  Bummer about taking a nasty fall during the experience.

Do you know for a fact or is it just a feeling? I keep hearing about phone snatchings all the time. An iphone costs more than that guy probably makes in 3 months.

In the US, even after they rob you, there's still a decent chance they'll shoot you.

I think this is one of the forms of crime that has been fairly common in Bangkok for many years. It's very mobile so criminals just cruise around looking for a target in different areas. I sometimes have JS100 on the radio in the car in the morning and they report this kind of crime fairly frequently, especially against women walking to a bus stop or on their way to work in the morning. Probably an opportunist crime and not specifically targeting a foreigner.
