Coffee Bean Recommendations

Madgee

Recommended Posts

My missus has acquired a Philips coffee maker and coffee bean grinder from a friend.

We both love a rich flavour without being too strong and bitter. No doubt it will be a passing fad but for now I'd like to give it a try.

I'm looking for recommendations for reasonably priced fresh coffee beans that can be ordered online as the big stores stock is normally quite old.

Thanks in advance.

We order these, (photo & link below) as good as any we've tried, and decent price.

We order about 3 kg at a time, and use 75-100gr a day, as my morning brew (drip) is 50gr coffee with 300gr water for a 200ml yield, so a decent Americano (w/10gr white sugar).  Wife less so, but may have 2 cups a day

If Cappuccino, then 50gr/150gr water & 100gr milk, same sugar.   Again, drip funnel.

Have Moka pot, French Press, Coffee machine, and I still prefer using an inexpensive drip funnel w/paper filter.  Side by side, and very little difference, though the other processes, use a bit less coffee for same yield, but not as easy to use & clean up.

Bon Cafe puts out some decent beans, and have sampled a few.  Prefer their "Morning Blend', with added plus of being their least expensive.  Better to buy at the shops, if possible, as cheaper than from chain stores that stock.

Have also tried 'blue mountain', 'aroma', Hillkoff, and a few others, but still come back to Cafe Roma beans.

I've also bought beans from a coffee shop or 2, that made an excellent cup of, but yet to be able to replicate the same results at home.  ????

Wife orders & pays via Line app, and arrives within a day or so.

I have been enjoying fresh roasted Thai coffee beans from the following company listed on Lazada.  I order the grade A, 1 kilogram size for 499 baht.  Maybe even free shipping.  Please visit the following link:

https://www.lazada.co.th/products/i272205270-s428904840.html?urlFlag=true&mp=1&tradePath=omItm&tradeOrderId=692214307716494&tradeOrderLineId=692214307816494&spm=spm%3Da2o4m.order_details.item_title.1

The owner communicates well and might even be American or another English speaking person.

Hillkoff Chiang Mai delivery anywhere Italian expresso beans unbeatable @220bt per bag ????

I order the Hillkoff 100% Arabica (French roast/dark) beans.

Best value for money found so far.
252 per pound (500 gr) plus shipment.

4 bags (2 kg) cost me 1067 Baht on last order.

In the past went for Arabica Casino brand (Brazil) at BigC. But the price has become ridiculous.

We use a dripper with paper filters (old fashioned but still best for me).

I've been buying ground coffee bc grinding coffee 450am will wake the wife. JIN on shopee has a med-dark french roast bean or ground 180b+/- 500g incl shipping. It's not epic, isn't flat or weak but lacks full bodiedness, bold, complex flavor... but ticks most of the boxes. Say it's all Arabica

Strength of Lao / rubusto can be great but it's just strong and often flat, one dimensional

Available in ground or bean.

fresh coffee beans

If you want really fresh coffee beans, you need to buy coffee in bags that have the date of roasting on them. The link I posted above to Hillkoff coffee, shows that that coffee is sold with a roasting date.

According to the link below: "Most baristas agree that consuming your coffee beans anywhere between 7-21 days after the stated roast date will give you the best-tasting coffee."

Most *baristas* are under 30 and only drink warm milk-coffee, know little or nothing about the stuff and are paid peanuts bc that's what the job is worth.

How many times now at airports I'm stuck with Starbucks. I wait ten minutes for a 5 dollar coffee to be handed to me cold. They have no connection to real coffee or real coffee drinkers.

While iced black coffee with sugar can be a refreshing as is a HOT and proper makiato (sp?) that's not what I order.

Black coffee please...

I often forget to say HOT and it just strikes me as so ironic bc to make coffee the water needs to be HOT.

*Excludes southern Europe where they take the job seriously.

^ Or grind the coffee in the kitchen instead of the bedroom. ????

The wall is shared. Everything dead silent. Grinders are ridiculously noisy. You're not funny just annoying

Is this the off-season for coffee growers in Thailand??

I've been ordering from several small, single farm, Chang Rai roasters for the last few years.  I really like their coffee's.  Just this past week, I tried ordering from two of them and they were "not currently accepting orders."   I'm assuming the last crop is sold-out and they are awaiting the next crop.

Does anybody have knowledge about local coffee farming practices?

That's why we only order 3 kgs at at a time.  Actually by some folks thinking, should order less, but first cup, taste the same as last cup, at the end of 3 kgs.

Obviously not the coffee purist, since drinking Americano or Cappuccino.  And that's 1:2 ration vs 1:1 for espresso, before the extra water flows threw or milk added.

Espresso, 1 or double shot,  even 1:2 ratio, is pretty vile stuff, and barely a sip

May I ask you where you did get the "Blue Mountain" ?

Thanks.

Yes, smaller growers have limited production capacity it is sold out quickly. And for the latest harvest it usually takes several month of waiting time

to pick the fruits, clean and dry them before they can be roasted.

Probably Lotus's, and that was quite some time ago, as still in Udon Thani at the time, so pre 2015.  May have been ground already. though vacuum packed.

Are there any Thai coffee growers growing Arabica? Vietnam or Lao? Perhaps not enough elevation but thought I'd ask.

Yes, plenty in the North of Thailand. Mostly smaller growers in the mountains. Robusta growers are mostly in the South.

Thank you. Lotus's - the exclusive Gourmet Shop ? ???? OK, jokes aside - this Blue Mountain is a real superior coffee and it is expensive, too. They had it for some time as a limited edition of Nespresso. But I have experienced that now multiple times: They promote a superb coffee only to take it out of the offering soon after.

I would even buy a filter coffee machine incl. grinder if I could get the Coffee Beans.

Completely different packaging, but as I said, long time ago.  Going to peek in Lotus's & Makro, see if they have.  Rarely shop at Lotus's, but Makro didn't have my yeast, and can't remember where I bought.  Swensen's (2/1 Tues) is in the Lotus's 'mall', so I'll be there Tuesday ????

"Abstract 13" is a high end restaurant and hotel coffee equipment and bean supplier with a retail store on Sukhumvit 71 in Phra Khanong.  They have a house "Blue" coffee that is excellent.
