Where's The Rust Coming From?

Featured Replies

One of our pool ladders is rusting where the SS bolts bolt onto the steps.

I thought it could be the bolts but even though they are not marine grade, they are high quality.

I thought of changing them for marine grade bolts but can't find any the same.

Where do you think the rust is coming from?

God......first world problems can be a real beatch at times.

When chloramines accumulate on stainless surfaces, superficial brown corrosion staining can appear. This mild corrosion will not impair the structural integrity of the stainless steel surfaces.

Thanks, but it's not happening like that on our other SS ladder that has no plastic steps and bolts.

Chlorine oxygenates the water (Raising the ORP). 304 stainless will rust in this environment. Get some absorbic acid (Vit C) and use it to clean the rust stains. You could soak the bolts in the solution as well. IMO it is the bolts rusting from the caustic water.

The quality of those bolts are not as high grade as you believe. Add that to the chemicals in the water and you have your answer.

Do you know where I can buy marine grade bolts?

I looked on Lazada and they don't have this type of bolt in marine grade.

2 shops in Pats. One or two at the OMJ & the other on the corner of Suk and the main road into Naklua (which is a pain to get to)
