Lets hypothesize a little bit. Say you're retired, around 70 years old. Say you came into a sizable amount of money, maybe a few million US dollars. Would you still reside in Thailand or would you move elsewhere? If you'd move elsewhere, where and why that country/location? 

I'd like say 3 places 1 being a ranch place in US, 2 on some remote island somewhere and 3 during retirement no problem Thailand being one of them with access to my helicopters and Learjet.

I'd still be here, same house, same woman but maybe a new car.

I'm OK with my life and what I have.

I would still be here, in the same house, doing the same things, except I would probably run the a/c more often during the early evening. Would probably also order some more rare books from overseas. Fundamentally, I'm happy here and just want things that affect me to stay the way they are.

You sound like one of them unimaginative British lottery winners.

An unpretentious new build at least 30 km from the current pile, with just me, my wife and two boys. Four bedrooms (one for each of us) and half-a-rai for the grub shrubs. Just far enough away that the lazy out-laws, squatters and other moobahn hangers-on can't be arsed visiting or walking in and out of the place like they own it.

 

And a summer place at Findhorn for the other half of the year, but just for me.

I would split my time between Chiang Mai, Koh Chang and overseas travel. I wouldn't really live anywhere.

If I did not already live most of the time in Thailand, with already having a place in PKK as well as in BKK, and then doing the frequent traveling I do back and forth to the US, I think I would add a place in Panama.  A few friends have recently retired there and are enjoying splitting time between there, the US and Morrocco.  All it takes is money.

Life in a spaceship would be like living on a boat but with more logistical issues, issues with oxygen, more problems with food and going to the toilet. Be a nightmare after 1 week.

Retired here at 42 , 35 years ago , money was not an issue ,

have had a good life here ,traveled to many places around

the World ,but just feel comfortable here.

you won't get anywhere near that with only a few mil. a hundred should do it.

Spacious luxury apartment in Lisbon. Preferably overlooking the 'Golden Gate Bridge'.  Not have any gardening or maintenance to worry about. A lady to do my laundry, dusting and vacuuming. Home hairdressing and manicures/pedicures. Send her out for any shopping or extra items I may need not covered by supermarket deliveries. I prefer having seasons but don't want to suffer discomfort because of them. Therefore, forced air ventilation, central heating and/or air conditioning running at optimum settings 24/7. Any paperwork that I cannot easily do myself on-line to be collected from my door and returned completed by same method.

That money would absolutely make no difference in my life. The biggest expense is healthcare while you are in another country, so I would probably be here in Thailand, but just travel a lot more to see my mom.

Tough call, since I haven't been any where except TH for over 20 years.

 

From past travels, though after 25 years they would probably not be that enjoyable now, for myself.  Key West Bimini, Bahamas, Caymans, Puerto Rico, Cozumel, Yucatan peninsula, all would be worth at peak again.

 

Probably just being nomadic, living out of hotels and not having any roots would suit me just fine.   Get bored, simply move on.

Maybe in 300 years time.

Likely only 3 or 4 months of the year here. I definitely would not be here late February to mid June. Far too hot and miserable air quality. 

 

I would mix it up. Likely a rural property somewhere in the US, for a few visits a year. Wouldn't live there full time, unless I were getting paid at least $3 million a year. Too miserable a place. But, fun to visit friends and family. 

 

Possibly a nice rancho in Spain or Portugal. Great for anytime from October through April or May. 

 

Though it is fun to dream, not likely to happen in this lifetime. 

I'd stay 6 months a year back in the West in a nice little town for fresh air, cool climate, seasons,  golf, fishing, hiking, good food and drink.

 

Then, 6 months in Thailand upcountry in the northeast living in house in a nice gated community with a pool. I have have rural house to go to a few days a week for some countryside living.

 

Of course, I'd fly down to Bangkok or Pattaya once in a while whenever I fancy the big city or seaside.

Yeah probably. Thailand still. I'd check out Spain first.

 

The more issue is just the type of people I want to be away from.

A few million isn't really rich.

Let's say you're talking 50 million plus and then I think I would go really big and study the lives of Russian oligarchs.

Not sure if I would buy places but I would "slow travel" much of the time to places like London and New York in good weather seasons (for the culture and live theater), and would mix in tropical paradises in luxury compounds. I would probably get all piggy and become a client of the "Nomad Capitalist" to avoid over taxation based on residency, give up my U.S. citizenship, and put a higher value on preserving health and longevity. I might not come to Thailand ever again as I think I would favor safer more developed destinations.

 

To add, if it was "just" a few million I buy a modest home for cash in the U.S. for about 400K in a place like Asheville North Carolina, enjoy life, and travel abroad as much or as little as I felt like.

I wouldn't move, happy where I am, but might buy a 2nd home near the beach somewhere.

Having no issue, illegitimate or otherwise, and no issue with money, either, I would retire to someplace where people care about me more than here.

 

It rains a lot there, even more than it does here.

 

 

Unfortunately, places of retirement such as this are sparse.

 

I could be voluntary, there; not committed.

 

I am voluntary, here, too, but it's not the same.

 

 

I'll take Manhattan March through September; Thailand October through February (Phuket, probably).  I can do that now.   With extra money I would take more trips, travel more, and up the scale.
