Has anybody had eye surgery in Chiang Mai?

I was down in Rayong recently and met a German man at the hotel swimming pool. As our conversation developed he noticed me in and out of the swimming pool but wearing my glasses.

I have slow growing cataracts on both eyes, a lazy left eye and I have both long and nearsightedness in the right eye.

He told me he had had the same problem with long and short sight in the same eye and had it operated on in Chiang Mai at a cost of 100,000- baht per eye and he no longer wore glasses for reading, driving, distance, nothing................ He said it was money very well spent............... He was late fifties and I am now 61.

He no longer required glasses.

The last visit I had with an ophthalmologist was in Kalasin a few years ago now, and he said either way I would need glasses for reading etc but apparently there have been leaps in eye surgery progress, and it is now achievable. I have Googled and it has confirmed this procedure can now be done.

I am asking if any board members have had  such surgery done or if they know the eye hospital he was referring to in Chiang Mai, he told me just as he was checking out when I inquired further the name of the hospital but I didn't have a pen and paper to hand, and thought I would remember it, but I cannot.

Thanks,

The only thing that concerns me a little bit is I am looking at getting new lenses inserted into my eyes to enable me to see near and far without glasses. However, in the photo on their webpage, four out of five surgeons featured are wearing glasses.

Laser surgery is not the most recommended solution to all vision issues.  It is not best for everything.

Why is that a problem?  All you have to do is not get involved, don’t engage.

Yep.   If you need the info, PM me.  And some of the info was personal to my wife and not for public consumption.    And I didn't want to get involved in the usual debates that occur on this forum.

That's understandable.

Thanks for the tip, I will check out this hospital.

You are aware that many (most) doctors advise single vision lens?  For not using glasses there are two paths.  One uses long vision in one eye and short in the other and your brain does the work (hopefully).  The other uses multi vision lens (which is very sensitive to position and not always successful).  Insurance plans do not normally approve multi vision lens as they are more expensive and problematic.  Most people are fine with cheap reading glasses rather than taking the risks of other paths.  But for others they are a fit.

I am not going the insurance route and have booked a highly regarded place in Wetherby, United Kingdom in September for a face to face consultation with the specialist.

I also wont be doing anything if it requires me to wear glasses after surgery.

I has my cataracts done here in CM by Dr Winai who has a clinic on the north side of the moat. The ops were done 4 weeks apart at Sripat Hospital .Cost was approx 50 k per eye. Dr Winai lectures during the week and his clinic is open from 5pm,see web site .

Ops are done on Sundays. He has excellent English and felt comfortable with his long standing experience and communication ability. 100% successful could not believe what I had been enduring and delaying. I only need el cheapo glasses for reading but long distance vision is wonderful.

No need to go to Bangkok there are other very competent specialists here in CM.

You seem to have posted a lasik surgery link - not the lens replacement (cataract removals) you appeared to be asking about.  Do you have cataracts?

Yes, unclear from the start. Appears he doesn’t know.

This link may help clarify the options https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/laser-eye-surgery-and-lens-surgery/

FWIW, my eyes have degraded with age and I have problems reading small print sometimes even with glasses.  I was told my eyes were too far gone for Lasik and that I would need lens replacement to be glasses free (football manager Juergen Klopp had his lenses replaced a year or 2 ago).

TLDR, you don't need cataracts to have lens replacement (unless your a Brit resident and want it done free on the NHS)

From what I can tell,

If you read it through, they do the whole lot actually.

I have slow growing cataracts on both eyes. I was looking towards the RLE surgery.

I have a lazy left eye and I only see in 2D and my right eye is both long and nearsighted.

So I've got to do something. I have made and appointment in the UK and will just go along and see what they have to say, after all, they are the experts!

Yes I do understand and if you read the brochure in full and all the way down,  this clinic does everything from Lasik, to RLE.

It is RLE I am hoping to have.

To see the services they provide just go to the drop down menu on the link I provided and look under treatments.

On the link I provide, look at the front page and go to the top where it says ' Treatments ' then a drop down menu will appear showing the vast range of services that they provide.

Cataract surgery in St. Peters is about 70k and in Sriphat around 50k. Had an eye done in each.  I had single focal lenses and can read without glasses but easier with.  For riding and driving excellent.  Trouble is everything's so bright you need 2 pairs of sunglasses! Age wise, I'm a little senior to you.

A significant percentage of people who undergo laser eye surgery experience complications. I understand the OP is asking primarily about something else but since it has been mentioned, I would urge anyone considering laser eye surgery to do extensive research first. And if you have had such surgery and experienced no complications then that's fantastic but in no way does it negate the fact that a lot of people are not happy with the results. It's only around 5% apparently so if you like playing the odds it's fine but if you don't, then maybe it's not the right choice (5% equates to around 1,250,000 unsatisfied patients so far).

Without clarification if the OP here needs cataract/lens replacement, or Lasik, or whatever ... we are all flying blind.

I had cataract surgery on both eyes in March at Sriphat by Dr. Paradee.

I had general anesthesia because of some other factors. PM me if you want more information.

cheers, ~o:37;
