A joint sitting of the Thai parliament will convene on July 13 to vote for the next prime minister, House speaker-elect Wan Muhamad Noor Matha said today (Wednesday).

Wan Muhamad was speaking one day after he was elected, uncontested, as the House speaker. He chaired a meeting today with parliament’s secretary general, in preparation for him and his deputies to receive the Royal command confirming their positions, which could happen in the next few days.

When he officially becomes the Speaker of the House, he will call the first meeting of the House of Representatives on July 12th, to discuss technical issues, he said.

No time limit for selection of PM : House speaker-elect

Originally-from-4.png

House speaker-elect Wan Muhamad Noor Matha said Wednesday that there is no limit to how many times parliament will meet to select the prime minister and Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat will not necessarily be the sole prime ministerial candidate.

He said that one joint meeting of the House and Senate may be enough, if Pita can muster the combined support of 376 MPs and senators.

He maintains that parliament is mandated by the Constitution to find the prime minister, adding “we must try until a prime minister can be selected, because we cannot govern the country without one.”

Parliament

The procedure for the selection of the prime minister at the joint meeting of members of the House and the Senate on July 13th is as follows:

▶︎ The names of the prime ministerial candidates must be submitted to the Election Commission by their parties. Currently, there are eight, namely Move Forward party’s Pita Limjaroenrat, Pheu Thai party’s Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Srettha Thavisin and Chaikasem Nitisiri, United Thai Nation party’s General Prayut Chan-o-cha and Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, Bhumjaithai party’s Anutin Charnvirakul and Democrat party’s Jurin Laksanawisit.

▶︎ A prime ministerial candidate nominated by a party must be seconded by at least one-tenth of the members of the parliament, to be approved by members of the two houses.

▶︎ Voting by MPs and senators is done by roll call in alphabetical order, with each stating “approve”, “disapprove” or “abstain”.

▶︎ The “approval” votes must be more than half the combined number of MPs and senators, or at least 376 votes out of a total of 749, to become the prime minister.

NEWLY-NAMED House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha  said the joint session to vote for a new prime minister will take place next Thursday (July 13) with this having been agreed upon with Senate Speaker Pornpetch Wichitchonchai, Sanook.com said  this evening (July 5).

According to the military-designed constitution unelected senators, totalling 250, join the 500 MPs in voting for the new prime minister who will need at least 376 yea votes to be elected.

Wan Noor pointed out that in the past senators were not involved in voting for the prime minister but the 2017 constitution mandates they do so for a period of five years – that is from May 2019 to 2024.

In which normal country can the opposition parties deliver a PM??? The Pm should be only be chosen from the coalition.. and mr Prayuth, Anutin, and the others should not even be qualified to be elected  as PM.....Never seen that the PM is from the opposition, govern the country will be very difficult
