Nato summit: Allies refuse to give Ukraine timeframe on joining

Nato states have said Ukraine can join the military alliance "when allies agree and conditions are met" after President Volodymyr Zelensky criticised the "absurd" delay to accession.

In a communique, Nato said it recognised the need to move faster but would not be drawn on a timeframe.

Earlier Mr Zelensky said there seemed to be "no readiness" to invite Ukraine to Nato or make it a member.

He is now in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, where the summit is happening.

Kyiv accepts it cannot join Nato while it is at war with Russia but wants to join as soon as possible after fighting ends.

But Mr Zelensky, tweeting before Mr Stoltenberg's comments, said that the lack of an agreed timeframe meant his country's eventual membership could become a bargaining chip.

"A window of opportunity is being left to bargain Ukraine's membership in Nato in negotiations with Russia. Uncertainty is weakness," he said.

Maybe the best time frame is when Ukraine gains a port on the Atlantic...

I guess you know better than the Ukrainians whether or not they are being used. Even ethnic Russian Ukrainians have overwhelmingly turned against Russia.

Why don't you ignore my thoughts and opinions I refer to NATO no-one else.

The best timeframe wouild be "never". Yes, and do use it as a bargaining chip to get Russia to the bargaining table.

Your bargaining chip didn't work so well when Zelensky offered it to Putin, weeks after he started his 'Special Operation'.

My thoughts always reflect that Ukraine is being used and it will continue to be used for as long as necessary by NATO.

You know, and I know this is how it works, and always have worked for empires and alliance's, because we need to secure the borders against our enemies and also the need to control available resources. Same for Russia who trying to secure their future position as a growing economic with available resources who feel they have been controlled, suppressed and limited for quite long now!

Aand of course it is a chess game with to many players.

When Turkey managed to become a member, anything is possible!

Turkey a very much needed buffer against middle east!

Not really, which Middle Eastern country is going to invade or start a war against any NATO country. They didn't need Turkey and should toss them out (I know they can't). Wile ever any country doesn't have free and fair elections it shouldn't. be part of NATO or the EU.

Look at the borderd and where all the refugees coming through!

Do you believe it is a coincidence there is so many refugees coming to europe, and there is no long term strategy behind it?

It's not NATO's job to stop refugees.

You understand it is a plan with refugees to destabilize europe, and it is a concern also for Nato, as most europeen countries is Nato members.

Russia have pushed Syrian and Ukraine refugees on the run in to Europe, + all other conflicted areas where also Russia, Saudi and partners from our own allies also taking part either directly or supporting one side of the conflicts.

Oh, no, no more conspiracy theories. It couldn't possible just be refugees fleeing war and poverty could it? We need to find some proxy excuse to hate refugees and you're right there on the band wagon.

Sometimes you have to understand there is a plan behind every conflict, where  also refugees is a brick in the play!

Surprised you never thought of it, or saw some news about it.

Refugees from the middle east are nothing to do with the invasion of Ukraine. I don't know where you're going with this. There is no master plan to push refugees to destabilize the EU. Stop insulting our intelligence with conspiracy theories. Please. Or prove your allegation with a credible link as required by the rules here which are intended to prevent tripe like this being posted.

What are they using Ukraine for? Just another ridiculous conspiracy theory. Non NATO countries also give direct military aid to Ukraine, what are they using Ukraine for?

If you cannot see a wider picture then there's no point in explaining.

You didn't provide any links which support your assertion. There is saying about not putting up. I live by it.

No need to explain why this world is ruled by short term voters and cheap sale arguments.

Why Im not surprised, when people do not understand organized chaos, is a weapon, weapon of strategy filled with emotions, same as the very same is surprised Ukraine was invaded, even history of other neighboring countries.

There is a need to explain, with credible links. You made a claim that there is a conspiracy to send middle eastern refugees to Europe to destabilise it and that this conspiracy was the cause of the war in Ukraine. Now back that up or concede that it's untrue. You can't peddle this kind of drivel without backing it up.

You made it a conspiracy because lack of credible sources, and not willing to see it from another perspective, or willing to do an effort to prove me wrong and the sources posted. Thats just a few of many available.
