I disagree.

Rather it is a compliment to the resilience of the survivors, and a testament to their perseverence.  Something that their descendents should be proud of.

And white kids shouldn't feel bad. They didn't do it. Nor did their parents, grandparents, or great grandparents.  The idea of intergenerational guilt is very, well, fascist.

White kids can feel however they feel. The idea of teaching history is to teach history.

Now you're telling black people how they should feel. Now, that's rich!

I believe that slavery is mentioned 191 times in the curriculum in Florida. One time it tangentally mentions the skills that slaves learned which might have been useful after they were freed.

Pretty thin gruel here.

Your claim:

Except the premise that black people benefitted from slavery is NOT in the curriculum in Florida,

My reply which counters that claim:

DeSantis defends Florida curriculum that suggests slaves benefited from forced labour

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis defended a hard-right school curriculum that went into effect in his state this week while on the campaign trail for the Republican presidential nomination.

Simple enough for you now? You were wrong about that. I made no claims about what else was included in the curriculum that is to do with slaves which obviously would cover more.

"At an event in Utah, Governor DeSantis defended how slavery will now be taught in Florida middle schools. Children will now be taught that enslaved persons picked up skills that they later “parlayed” into profitable crafts after slavery was abolished.

“They’re probably going to show that some of the folks that eventually parlayed, you know, being a blacksmith into doing things later in life,” Mr DeSantis told reporters on Friday."

The media is really stretching here.

Media spin. Just words. Happened long ago.

Sad how they twist everything.

They should feel lucky. Most born 2000+ in the west has it easy

One view. Not explanation.

Having skills allowed those people to buy themselves some time.

Enough for Germany to be defeated before the nazis could kill them.

So saying that some Jews survived thanks to their skills is indeed a statement that requires contextualization. Ultimately they survived because they got lucky.

Skills or no skills all Jews were meant to be killed.

The memorial representative is right imo.

You really don't get it? Guttfeld was using how some Jews survived Auschwitz to justify saying that some black slaves acquired useful skills while enslaved. So maybe Auschwitz and slavery weren't so terrible after all?

Not what I got from it at all. Anyway, we are starting to do what the Dutch call "ant <removed>", trying to split a hair into more and more fibers.

The worst part of the situation was actually the Vice President, making prepared remarks on the subject that were false. Not the banter between talking heads on a chat show.

The Jews and other prisoners arriving at Auschwitz were not run through an aptitude test.  Those who looked young and strong enough to survive a few months of manual labor on a starvation diet were forced to work until they dropped.  The rest were killed shortly after they arrived.

Being young and healthy isn't a skill.

Your sensitivity on this subject is heart warming.

Also of course too young got the instant gas.

There are some survival stories of kids who were smart enough to lie about their age and make the cut off.

Thanks, I thought I handled it rather well myself.  These are delicate topics and need to be dealt with in a nuanced manner.

Sigh……….………

“At any other place, his career would be over,”

Yet another so-called comedian who doesn't do comedy.  Like Kamau Bell.  (How's that for equal time?)

The most memorable and heartbreaking sight on my Auschwitz tour 20+ years ago was a room with a big pile of baby shoes.
