Thailand military has powerful people at the top of all the factions of the military.

  My Thai- Canadian friends all tell me, that Thai politics is different than Canadian politics

and I believe them.  Over the years I have learned many things about Thailand, but am constantly surprised

by many aspects even today. hierarchy is still very active in most aspects of Thai life. Just saying.

Article 272 says that the power of the senators to vote for a PM expires in May 2024, which seems like however new senators are appointed – or elected – their seats in the parliament will not be included in vote for a primeminister...

Article 272 states that for the first five years of Parliament under the current Constitution, the new prime minister shall be elected by a joint sitting of Parliament. The candidate must gain votes from “more than half of the total number of existing members of both Houses” to be successful.

Can they wait it out? If they can this would throw a unwanted spanner into the works. 

That's a big discussion and question in the news at the moment.

Some news-articles have concern about the economics due to lack of a working government, others say that the outgoing Prayut Chan-o-cha government just will continue until May 2024.

  That is exactly correct. The Senate firewall was built by the cronies to ensure that true democracy cannot take a foothold in Thailand and that they remain relevant despite being in the minority.

If they continue until May 2024, which does seem possible, then they will use that time to put in place measures that keep them in power after that.
