War of words erupts over Britain’s plea for post-Brexit migrant return deal

Tory MPs urge Rishi Sunak to get asylum returns deal – as Brussels rejects reports that the EU Commission has blocked an agreement

A war of words has erupted following claims that the EU has rejected Rishi Sunak’s plea for a post-Brexit asylum seeker returns deal to ease the small boats crisis.

It was claimed that a senior European Commission official told the UK’s national security adviser earlier this year that there was no prospect of such an agreement.

But an EU Commission spokesperson rubbished reports on Tuesday as “not correct”. A UK government spokeswoman insisted that No 10 remains “open to working with the EU to take forward negotiations on a UK-EU returns deal”.

It sparked a row among Tory MPs, as Brexiteers lashed out at the “immoral” EU for failing to help tackle the Channel crossings, while moderate Tories urged Mr Sunak to forge a returns deal so Britain can work more closely with its nearest neighbours.

Return agreements are viewed by some as key to solving the migrant crisis and the PM still hopes to strike a deal with the EU Commission that would allow Britain to return people to European countries where they have previously claimed asylum or have links to.

You do know that the French government wanted to build, at their expense, a processing centre on French soil but the spineless Brexity UK government refused this.

Given that around 80% of asylum applications are granted one can see why the Tories don't want due process. It suits them to have the the knuckle scraping morons on side blaming Jonny Forrinners for the <deleted>e they've had heaped upon them for 13 years .

It's called distraction tactics and it's worked for the Tories....so far.

Absolute nonsense. Biggest load of tosh I've heard for ages.

Back in reality, we agreed to pay 576 million to France.

Of course, the French will do nothing.

PS we won't be rejoining. So get used to waiting.

If France are doing nothing, then why are the UK Government handing over millions?

Shelling out millions with no return is normally reserved for their chums.

Perhaps what is being requested to be done isn’t what actually needs doing.

Good question. Maybe they made the mistake of believing the french would honour their commitments. Big mistake given their history and the EU's bitter attitude since Brexit. I would have given them nothing. I also would have given them nothing during the Brexit divorce bill negotiations but then I am not a huge fan of the EU as you may know.

Maybe the Government are asking the French to do something which is having little or no impact.

And how long did it take for the UK to come to an agreement about this? France proposed it at least as far back as Nov 28, 2021.

And it's a mark of how empty the case you make is that you invoke the future as some kind of evidence.

The future? Have you not seen the news over the last few months? It's still rampant.

Illegal channel crossings. Do try to keep up dear, it's tiresome pointing out the obvious.

And of course, this comment tells us nothing about the effect that the construction of this center will have on emigration from France of these people. Crystal balling much?

Maybe, sweetheart, you should try to grasp the fact that x number of immigrants who are making it through to the UK by itself tells us nothing about the efforts being made to slow this emigration.. It's the percentage that are making it through that counts. You got any figures for that? Maybe a totalitarian nation could mine the beaches to slow the exodus. France, not so much.

Maybe the French are just totally inept as you suggest, but I doubt they are breaking their backs, given the figures.

Maybe it’s time to stop blaming the French.

Oh I forgot.

It’s always somebody else’s fault.

So imaginative. Never heard that one before. Bravo. No mention of Unicorns? I'm disappointed in you.

Moving away from inane, repetitive catchphrases, given the figures I linked to either they are inept or they are deliberately allowing them onto the boats. Placeholder believes they are inept. I believe they are deliberate allowing them onto boats. And you?

I have no reason to believe they are deliberately allowing anyone into boats.

Perhaps they are unable to stop people getting into boats.

Now who was it that made a promise to put a stop to this and why do you avoid holding them responsible for their failure?

I’m not blaming anyone’s country.

I am holding the British Government accountable for its own failures, and that failure, indeed this thread,  has nothing at all to do with your ‘socialism’ trolling.

Here’s a clue:

The UK cannot stop the French allowing them onto the boats. We've already paid them for the job. We can't fix their incompetence.
