Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be given additional security and appropriate “conveniences” while he is detained at Bangkok remand prison, following his return to Thailand this Tuesday, according to Aryut Sinthoppan, director-general of the Corrections Department.

He said that he has received instructions from Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, also acting justice minister, on Thaksin’s security, convenience and comfort while inBangkok remand prison.

According to Wissanu, the former prime minister should be provided with extra security, because he is at more risk than other inmates, and be provided with appropriate conveniences“but not to the extent that they could be seen as a privilege”,because he is expected to be visited by representatives of international organisations, human rights groups, his supporters and members of the media.

Regarding the issue of comfort, Wissanu wants Thaksin to be provided with appropriate comfort for someone who is over 70 years of age and ailing, said Aryut.

For security reasons, he said Thaksin may not be incarcerated with the other inmates, because prison officials will have to take care of his food and ensure that his visitations will not affect the rights of other inmates.

Probably long enough to get a pardon then get back into politics. A man with his resources wouldn't come back without such guarantees.

Other prisoners would not be allowed to receive such persons, why should he be allowed to do this?

He made a deal with the devil to get special treatment and a pardon will follow quickly.  Shows what a self serving individual he really  is.

I stopped reading Wikipedia for anything political after I caught them editorializing too many times.

So, in other words he’s gonna get HI-So house arrest.

Wouldn’t it be awesome, if they just told him that only to throw him into a medieval dungeon?

I know, I know, it’s just a silly pipe dream of mine, but I’d really love that!

Him and his party.

Bit he wasn't going to prison acording to news information, that he got pardoned.

And if they decide to welch on the deal and lock him away Monte Christo-style what is he going to do about it, other than hope his lawyers get it into court?

I'll believe all this if/when he actually returns.

Inmates can apply for a Royal Pardon after serving a minimum of one third of their sentences. Royal Pardons, are it seems, actually rarely granted. It may not be this channel that he pursues but some other type of review with a release on bail.

Maybe close. I remember some years ago a VIP, probably a politician but I forget now,  was jailed and after just one day he was declared sick and transferred to a luxury hospital suite. Then, as usual in the news here, nothing was ever heard of the matter again.

Royal pardons are given out on the King's birthday every year. Or were under the late King. I don't know what percentage are/were granted each year.

He'll have silk napkins, colour matched to his smoking jacket.

This is certainly more entertaining than Thai soaps!  If he returns, then unless he's having a breakdown (could be?), I would expect that he has a "deal" and this is not a brown envelope deal - brown envelopes don't come big enough!  Maybe he can pressure someone who can ensure his freedom.  I shall not speculate on whom that might be, but the list of potential "benefactors" is extremely short.  Perhaps it's not what you know, nor even who you know, but it's what you know (and can prove) about who you know!   I'm on the edge of my seat awaiting the next thrilling instalment!

The question remains, how will Thaksin take care of his grandchildren once he's imprisoned?
