Hi all

My better half and I will be travelling to Phuket and Bkk 3 days / 2 nights in phuket. i am looking at staying at the JW Marriott or the Hilton in phuket. All we wanna do is relax chill out on the beach some water sports etc ... which one is better ? hilton with the ocean view is a lil cheaper than the marriott.... what else would you all suggest for phuket ? oh we will be getting tattoos aswell either in phuket or bkk ... some thing not to big ....

After phuket we head out to BKK reah 16th afternoon and depart on the 18th evening, there i am looking at the marriott or the holiday inn near the sukhmovit road ... which is better ? the rates are almost comparable ... anything else in this range .. .BKK will be all shopping and having a good time ... maybe the night and the weekend market as welll//// any suggestions / feedback

I haven't seen the Hilton, but the Marriott in Phuket is an absolutely beautiful resort. 3 swimming pools of different depths to accomodate the kiddies (and hopefully keep them away from the adults). The rooms are beautiful and peaceful - opening onto a wooded courtyard area that makes every room very private.

I would note that the JW doesn't offer a lot to do on the beach except walk on it. It's situated on a government reserve for turtles, so they don't have jetskiing, sailing, etc. But the view is really nice.

When we were in Phuket, we rented a car at the airport and drove to the Marriott. It's otherwise difficult to get away from the resort.

The JW Marriott in Bangkok is much better than Holiday Inn - especially if you get a club level room. It's worth the extra cost, in fact.

Don't forget it's monsoon season. Swimming isn't safe at this time of the year - the beaches adjacent to either the Marrriott or the Hilton ( Kata) take their toll every year.

Marriott! Fantastic hotel, but pricey.

It is isolated from the town but there is so much to do at the resort that you should not care.

They have an excellent fitness staff that offers yoga, and various other excercises in the morning, but you must sign up for the classes and they fill up fast. They have quite a few daily activitites come to think of it.

If you play tennis they have tennis courts.

They have bikes which you can rent and cycle around some plantation.

They have massage classes (ideal for couples, and no nothing kinky this is you in a room with other couples)

The pools are nice and pretty much separated for kids, kids with adults and adults only.

Nice spa / massage clinic.

HOWEVER, the food in ALL of their restaurants SUCKS! Overpriced, Tasteless, excuses for meals. (with the exception being their bakery, hard to mess that up).

Ohh and they have really cool live cultural type entertainment in the evenings.

Ohh the beach at the Marriott is kinda semi private so you will be hard pressed to get a tatoo there.

Blue Marine Resort & Spa.

Nice rooms.

Very nice location at the Northern edge of Kamala Beach - Patong, away from the noise and bars but within walking distance and close enough to avoid huge rip off tuktuk fares coming back if you want to visit them. (We took our car down there so didn't have those issues.) Good pools, no private beach but the small sandy bay between the rocks nearby was not busy while we were there, Nov 2005.

While we were there there was only about 20 other rooms occupied, the customer service was fantasic. On the first morning I asked for fresh hot water for tea, it was then prepared without asking eveyday of our stay.

I think the list price was about 10,000 Baht, we were paying about 7,000 a night.

This part of Kamala is on a steep hill, some of the lower sections of the hotel (gatehouse and part of restaraunt) were splashed during the Tsunami'04 but no damage impact to the bulk of the hotel estate. Although the view from the rooms was a little eerie as the general scene of the beach seen through trees and small Thai roofs has been seen so many times in tourist videos from that morning.

Having a car allows you to get to the shopping mall for the cinema complex and spending money.

I can offer other thoughts if you would like guidance on other beaches, roads etc.

This place is next door if you want a comparison.

I've stayed at the Marriott and the Holiday Inn and it depends upon what you want. The Marriott is secluded and a good 30 to 40 minute drive from town. The Holiday Inn has some great rooms which step straight into the pool.

I suggest it depends upon what facilities you use.

I read some where that at the marriott all you can do is snorkel and no other water sports and for that you need to travel ... hmmm that kind aputs me off .... but i like the idea of the semi private beach .. .no one to bother to you to buy thos or that the massage thing really not into the kinky thing .... lol just as long as it is relaxing ... the phuket leg of the trip for me is to kick back for a couple of days have a beer or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 .... ( you get the idea) and just forget every thing get a tattoo some water sports walk on the beach and just have fun but not be totally isolated... the mrs gets bored of that after a while .... but if the restrausts at the marriott suck then i guess the marriott is out and it is the hilton ( which is a lil cheaper ( 6000 THB per night incl breakfast for a sea view king room )) and any thingt else some one may suggest ... any one ???

If you want a 5 star place with an isolated virtually private pristine beach, and would like it close to Patong for the tatoos and other messy stuff Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort is one of your best choices, not counting the 5 star places in Laguna, Surin, etc..

I'm no expert on Phuket only having been there one time for an overnight trip. The Hilton resort is at Karon Beach, about a 15 minute walk south of the town center. It is a large self-contained resort complex, sitting on 70-something acres of property. There are 3 or 4 different buildings of rooms with a few hundred rooms. I found it to be quite nice, but then again I'm also a Hilton Hhonors Diamond VIP, so I get special treatment, free upgrades to suites, etc. It's quite a haul from the airport. You can get a meter taxi at the airport, but will probably get stuck with a pricier private car for the return. The beach is right there only a couple of minutes walk. Of course there are also swimming pools on the resort grounds. I thought I may have read something about the property changing hands, but I'm not positive. I can't comment on the hotel restaurants because I went into town to eat.
