Where I live Ive noticed more locals are not obsessed with wearing the facial mask anymore. But some still are.

Rational people take advice from persons recognized as authorities, experts and Doctors in their field. Personally, I feel that the Thai people show great respect for one another (and farangs) by wearing masks. I disagree. I spoke to a dr at bumrungrad about this. She said thai people are not wearing masks to consider other people. They wear them to protect themselves. thats all.

How does your 'Doctor' know the reason why Thais wear masks, does she talk to them all?

Does your doctor usually find time to also have conversations with a farang about her views on medical matters.

The majority of Thais that I meet and work with all wear a mask and they all seem to understand how the mask works and that it is a prevention to spreading the disease.

 

Your presumed Doctor is either an idiot or doesn't exist.

I wear a hat outside to protect my exposed head from sunburn.  I wear sunglasses to protect my blue eyes from glare.  I wear a mask at times to protect from smells of car and motorcycle exhaust, children coughing and sneezing, and protection from sun on my nose and face under my hat.  

 

 

Lived here all during the pandemic and mandates were not enforced as with so many laws or mandates,  Really a non-issue in Thailand during the pandemic except inside some larger grocery stores where the management required masks, similar to requiring a shirt and shoes while inside a business.  Not a problem for 99% of people IMO

I don't know where you were living during the pandemic but I would have to guess that you were in a tourist area.

Where I live, (Samutprakarn) everyone wore masks and followed the mandates, if you were not wearing a mask, you would not have gotten onto any shops.

Even the outside markets had a mask requirement and they has temperature posts at the entrances.

In fact, apart from the airport, masks are still very much the norm in Samutprakarn.

 

Also, you would not get into shops here without a top on, again that's only normal in tourist areas or deep, deep Isaarn.

A lot of people do... There is an element of social pressure when it comes to mask wearing. 

If most around are wearing a mask, not through any understanding of the reasons but simply because everyone else is wearing a mask, then there is an element of 'following other people like sheep'... and often people want to think critically about their actions and behavior.

 

Thus - people care because they don't want to be the one that others look poorly upon for not socially conforming by wearing a mask, yet at the same time the realise that wearing a mask isn't quite necessary any more.

 

 

 

 

I’ve been back in the UK for a few months after 2 1/2years in Issan. In the same way I had to escape the locked down early 2021 UK for my own sanity I found that the ridiculous Thai public still 80% wearing masks in supermarkets as well as outside was similarly twisting my melons.

 

I’m travelling the UK for work constantly and now and then you’ll see the odd mask wearer in the street or sometimes one staff member in a shop or McDonalds. 
 

These people are suffering from a mental illness.

It’s not normal to decide to go and hang out and socialise with school friends at the Mekong River of an evening with a full face covering mask. Would you find it strange if it became the norm for kids to get brainwashed into this trend in a European country? 
 

I see the odd deluded mask wearer on my travels here in the UK as I do a 1000miles a week fixing 5hit. Some are obviously bewildered old folk or genuinely lost so we’ll exclude them but then there’s that one burger flipper that’s gotta be the one whose still wearing a mask. Then a couple of days ago in Aberystwyth,University town, I saw a couple of lefties student types through out the day probably on their way to pay for a bag of chips with a cheque walking down the road with masks on. Students, another bunch of brain washed who can’t see they are just customers of the educational industrial complex who will be lucky to get a job in a Convenience store when they graduate. I was fixing a machine in the back of house at a supermarket yesterday and got chatting with an 18 year old shelf stacker mid A levels. I didn’t have the heart to tell him he would probably never leave the stacking trade. Although I did tell him stop all his education and learn to fix machines. Looking at how he walked I then thought to changed my mind and told him to enjoy Uni. 
 

Funny how I have never seen a fellow engineer wearing a mask. In fact I’d be interested to meet a mask wearer and challenge them to list everything they know of use, excluding how to get dressed, get on a bus and how to purchase food on a sheet of A4 paper.

If a society does a certain thing like wearing masks then that is normal. Normal means what most people are doing.

 

That you have to call people wearing masks as "bewildered", "lost" or "gotta be the one who" shows that you fail to understand that some people might be more vulnerable in terms of immune system or maybe they have a cold and wouldn't want to spread it. Some companies have clear rules about safety measures and can require wearing a mask.

I bet you loved the mask didn’t you ? I never believed any of it. Never wore a mask in a UK supermarket or anywhere. Only Thailand and the bare minimum. I get the feeling you would have been going along with everything in the 1940’s if you had the chance.

Actually COVID is still a big problem and masks help - are they perfect? - No, but the correct mask, worn correctly is very helpful, and my household of four has had  everyone get covid in the last couple of months - so I can assure you that COVID is still an issue.

 

Also I am in a high risk group as are millions of people worldwide so if you don't care about others then no comment... but I hope that you don't get COVID and no elders in your family get it from you...

That's the main issue with wearing masks. If they save a life here and there because particles don't reach someone that's close to  you then that's their worth. They also help with not spreading colds and flu. I'd be willing to bet they have saved many lives before certain people got their vaccinations. Some people don't care about others, and their numbers are high.

No kidding. My point was that there are those that have conditions that would hurt them more than just a cough or sore throat. Wearing a mask can save lives the way I mentioned it before. People get close to each other everywhere, and if you have Covid, and are wearing a decent mask, your particles could be kept away from a person near you that hasn't been vaccinated, or that has a weakened immune system. Saving someone's life isn't a fantasy. Not caring about others around you is antisocial.

I haven’t been vaccinated and I had Covid in the UK on the day Boris announced for everyone to stay at home and subsequently destroyed the economy and countless lives telling us a 1000 people a day of differing ages, and to be scared. I then got it in Isaan a week after Omicron was talked about in the media. Just a cough for me. And strangely I have not been I’ll from any throat based illness since. Among various businesses i fix  machines at are supermarkets. The amount of talk I hear about workers being off with Covid is ridiculous. One guy said to me, who had been swinging the lead for two weeks until he tested clear, that he wished he had not taken that juice. He has been off six times with it so far.  I suppose my scepticism is born from working in a food factory in the whole year 2020 with 1000 international workers, where Covid was just not a thing. I left that factory in late January 2021. Completely sick of the lack of effects of Covid to the general public or those of us in the factory, or as I called it to test bed. I headed for Thailand for just over two years where I saw nothing to talk of either. People getting Covid and surviving with out medical intervention is nothing to report.

I didn't have it until last month - one of my kids brought it home from school almost no-one wearing masks - yet kids get COVID and alerts are not sent out - if they had been I would have worn a mask at home for a while and more likely than not gotten COVID... And COVID was almost a go to the hospital sickness for me...

I escaped COVID until now by being careful: masks etc and vaccines and regular boosters but I do not wear a mask at home and schools are not requiring masks so I want careful enough recently.

What I have noticed is some people wear masks and some don't.

 

I have noticed that more people wear masks in some places (crowded BTS/MRT). than in others.

 

I try to wear a mask if everyone seems to do so (like on BTS), not bothered if I forget, get no dirty looks.

 

I was living in an AirBNB in a nice high rise apartment in BKK for a month this year. Almost everyone wore a mask in the elevator there and I tried to do so as well. Some people seemed to be paranoid in the elevator, turned their face to the wall right up to their nose touching. I got the impression they thought foreigners (like me) were carrying disease, but  don't really know. I guess the elevator is a confined space so that was the thinking.

 

Now I don't think about it much either way until I see a thread like this.
