Popular Post webfact
BANGKOK, Sept 4 (TNA) – Defence Minister Sutin Kluangsang has declared the military’s readiness to align with the government’s policies and has specified an immediate reduction in military conscription quotas. Mr. Sutin and Prime Minister and Finance Minister Mr. Srettha Thavisin on Sunday met the incoming military leaders. During the talks, they addressed the country’s current situation, inquired about issues, and exchanged the various needs and demands of each party. They wanted to push forward various policies, such as transitioning to a voluntary military service system and asked the military about their requirements for government support in various aspects. The military’s perspective aligned with that of the government, as they had been continually improving their organization and were willing to adhere to the government’s policies. Whether these changes would occur swiftly or gradually, they aimed to keep the government informed about any challenges that might arise. mfd101
There is a reasonable argument in favour of conscription, namely that it offers to poor & uneducated peasant boys (my b/f was one) a window on a new bigger world of which they have no prior knowledge or experience. Whether that counts as a counterargument to those who see conscription - not unreasonably - as supporting military authoritarianism and threats to democracy depends on the circumstances at any particular time. The point is that, like most important issues in government & life, it's not black'n white. 2

YES, but how many really gain a valuable skill which would be recognised as desireable / valuable by an outside employer and bring a good salary? As well known many end up: - Sitting around all day doing nothing? - Signing their very small salaries over to their CO? - Work 18 hrs per day 6? days per week mowing lawns / sweeping driveways etc? 2

No, no, no. The number of troops in field formations will fall, resulting in dangerously understrength units, which will have to be remedied by increasing conscription quotas in subsequent drafts. 1 1
