FruitPudding Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Where to find the best fish chips in Bangkok? So far, I think it's the Red Lion. Any opinions?
herfiehandbag Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 It really is remarkably easy to make your own. Dory fillets (3 pieces for B100) A couple of potatoes (B25) Packet of batter mix (B15) Small can of beer to make the batter (B40) Deep fried in the wok. Fish and chip supper, with a glass of beer for B110. 1 1

Whilst they are cooking mix the batter (about 1/3 the can of beer) dunk the fish in the batter, then once the chips are done bung the fish in.
still kicking Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 Of all my years in Thailand I never had decent fish and chips now back in the west I do my fish and chips in the air- fryer.
Jelli Posted September 9, 2023 Posted September 9, 2023 I'd egg coat it and roll in panko bread crumbs. Big C does something like this. Big C filet used to be b49 on sale now b69+ regular. I'll toast some bread add lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. Semi healthy fast food. Two huge sandwiches The battered fish might be a heart attack on a plate but it's delicious and red lion does do a nice one

EVENKEEL Posted September 10, 2023 Posted September 10, 2023 Wouldn't a fish with more solid meat like halibut or salmon make a better choice for fried fish. I had it once in Canada for Pub Grub, to die for. 1
ChipButty Posted September 10, 2023 Posted September 10, 2023 I gave up looking a long time ago, here in Phuket places come and go,

And what's the price of halibut here, if you can get it, and most of the salmon I have bought here was absolute rubbish. panagasus is also very bad, no taste.

You're right about halibut but salmon here in Thailand is doable. I'm not a fish expert but regularly eat salmon from Makro. I've had some soggy fried fish I think was dory, they come in huge pieces which makes bad finger food and what's with mushy peas. 1

Cod or other white cold water fish is virtually unobtainable in rural Chiang Rai province. Even in the city, 30 odd Km away, it is rare to find it on sale. Cooked carefully, and with attention paid to a good beer batter, it is passable.
