Social Media Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 The sea-ice surrounding Antarctica is well below any previous recorded winter level, satellite data shows, a worrying new benchmark for a region that once seemed resistant to global warming. "It's so far outside anything we've seen, it's almost mind-blowing," says Walter Meier, who monitors sea-ice with the National Snow and Ice Data Center. An unstable Antarctica could have far-reaching consequences, polar experts warn. Antarctica's huge ice expanse regulates the planet's temperature, as the white surface reflects the Sun's energy back into the atmosphere and also cools the water beneath and near it. Without its ice cooling the planet, Antarctica could transform from Earth's refrigerator to a radiator, experts say. The ice that floats on the Antarctic Ocean's surface now measures less than 17 million sq km - that is 1.5 million sq km of sea-ice less than the September average, and well below previous winter record lows. That's an area of missing ice about five times the size of the British Isles. FULL STORY
novacova Posted September 18, 2023 Posted September 18, 2023 How many times has the ice melted before humans arrived? How many more times will it melt after we’re gone? 1

Emperor penguins, do a runner because it's to hot in Antarctica. Record low 2022 Antarctic sea ice led to catastrophic breeding failure of emperor penguins We provide evidence of a regional breeding failure of emperor penguin colonies due to sea ice loss using Sentinel2 satellite imagery. Of the five breeding sites in the region all but one experienced total breeding failure after sea ice break-up before the start of the fledging period of the 2022 breeding season. This is the first recorded incident of a widespread breeding failure of emperor penguins that is clearly linked with large-scale contractions in sea ice extent. https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-023-00927-x 2 1

A truly clueless comment. The continent of Africa has a total surface area of 30,365,000 square km Africa's total land area is approximately 11,724,000 square miles (30,365,000 square km), and the continent measures about 5,000 miles (8,000 km) from north to south and about 4,600 miles (7,400 km) from east to west. https://www.britannica.com/place/Africa As per the BBC news report, he highest ever recorded expanse of Antarctic sea ice is slightly over 20 million square kilometers. So what your asking is for an alarm about the low level of sea ice when it's about 50% higher than ever recorded. 1

In your haste to refute me you overlook the point I was making in the Africa comment, which is to stop being Chicken Little and claiming the sky is falling, when sea ice varies from year to year and just because there is less in one year it does not mean that there will be less in 10 years time, as it may very well be more than previously.
