Republican presidential candidate and former Rep. Will Hurd (Texas) said Monday that former President Trump is only running for president to avoid being incarcerated.

“The problem that I have with Donald Trump is, is Donald Trump’s not running for president to Make America great again. He’s running for president to stay out of prison,” Hurd said during an appearance on NewsNation’s “NewsNation Now with Connell McShane.” 

 

Hurd also claimed that Trump is taking credit for ideas promoted by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and former Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Tex.), such as the 2017 GOP tax cut law, to bolster his image. 

“And so these were some of the people that helped make sure our economy…was strong when Donald Trump was in office,” Hurd added.

When asked if his presidential campaign is hurting the chances of fellow candidates in the race, Hurd replied that he’ll support whoever becomes his party’s presidential nominee in 2024. 

“I’m clear, I’ve been supportive of that philosophy and recognize that if we want to make sure that we have a GOP nominee that can beat Joe Biden and address issues, like problems at the border, we’ll potentially need to consolidate,” Hurd told McShane. 

Hurd’s remarks come a month since after Trump along with 18 of his allies were indicted by a Georgia grand jury on charges tied to efforts to overturn the 2020 election. 

Trump, who announced his third presidential campaign last November, has been hit with three other indictments this year relating to to his business dealings, handling of classified documents, and his behavioral actions in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

As far as I can see he’s running for several reasons. Staying out of jail, as mentioned here. To continue fleecing the rubes of their hard earned money. He’s making hundreds of millions of dollars a year that way, milking his election lie for all it’s worth.
But probably most importantly: to get his revenge. He’s made it abundantly clear that when he becomes president again, it will be an all-out punitive expedition against everyone he sees as an enemy. Which is basically anyone who has ever so much as looked funny at this thin skinned man-child.

In terms of the immediate damage to the country I would say George Bush Jr.   However in terms of damage to US institutions and trust in elections, Trump definitely did the most long term damage. 

 

Nixon was bad, but the country quickly pulled itself together and carried on after he was ousted.

The House Republicans have had several hearings that delivered exactly diddly squat in evidence against Joe Biden. Yet they’re pressing on with their bogus impeachment inquiry, even though they still don’t have a shred of evidence of wrongdoings by Joe Biden. And even though there are plenty of Republican members of the House and senators who are opposed bigly and would much rather see this all go away very quickly, as it is hurting their chances of re-election. 
I really hope this whole impeachment sham is going to blow up in the Republican’s faces and will cost them the presidency, the House and the Senate.

After myself experiencing much time in LOS, and eventually getting frustrated with some of the continued short sidedness, and incompetence, I can experience here...

 

when I go back to my home country, thinking I'm going back to a country that does things right, that people take the time to think things though. However, I am instantly brought back into the realization that, there are also some pretty 'limited' individuals  living and working there as well.

I say that because at age 74, most of my working career, I have never received a salary. I consciously choose jobs that paid only... 'performance-based-pay'.

My son lives near Tacoma, Washington state. He NEVER wanted to own a weapon but bought one a few years back for exactly what you describe - sheer necessity. Though he lives in an upper-middle class neighborhood, the police have basically given up. The bad guys outnumber them and are much more heavily armed. He tells me of cars cruising regularly with their lights off near his home, obviously up to no good. He works odd hours so he sees them and they see he's up and about.

 

Yup, good ol' US of A has some serious growing up to do.
