How much do you know about the difference between fiction and fact? ????

From the author of the book you mentioned..

"This is a [fictional] novel, not an autobiography; though much in it is autobiographical, more is pure invention."

I only know my fiction is stranger than fact.

See, now I would have said your fact is stranger than fiction, but hey, each to his own.????

Correct.

I actually thought, long and hard, before deciding to mix it up, a bit.

Just hoping for a comment such as yours.

You seem to have not overlooked the obvious.

Thank you!

So that's a definite maybe GG?

You're losing it dude.

You see.

A true scientist must never state the obvious as an immutable fact.

Scientists must always use words like apparently, or from the data it seems to show that....

This is why I (almost) ALWAYS use absolutely and maybe in the same sentence.

These are things you learn while writing theses, which I accurately call feces.

In fact, ALMOST everyone knows that most theses are nothing but feces, maybe.

The thing about Maugham is that if one were to read him at an early enough age, then the reading of Maugham could encourage one to become more caring for one's fellow man.

Actually, Maugham was a piece of work.

"His (Hugh Walpole) reputation in literary circles took a blow from a malicious caricature in Somerset Maugham's 1930 novel Cakes and Ale:"-Wikipedia

Walpole, although not as good a writer as Maugham, was popular and outsold him leading Maugham to attempt a character assassination, which worked.

He did subsequently recant  his remarks on Walpole only to cowardly re-state them on Walpole's death. His characters might have fine virtues but he himself was rather lacking.

Once upon a time(2005), I met this "lady of the night" in Bangkok, I wasnt interested in her services, I was just sat people watching, it was late and she was tired and we sat shared a drink and a few laughs just whiled away an hour or so with idle chit chat.

Long story short, she asked if she could stay in my room ? I reminded her that I wasn't buying. She explained she wasn't from Bangkok and just came down for the weekend to make some money and was going "hone" in the morning. She seemed decent enough, so what the hell I said Ok.

She made an advance awhile later and I reminded her again that I wasnt buying, she replied, no, this is a thank you for letting me stay. She rocked my world that night,we shared breakfast in the morning and she was gone. Often reflect on that night and never experienced anything quite like that ever again.

Have a similar story, slightly different. Wasnt buying. She was out, we talked some and somehow she was afraid to stay night out on beach. Thought of doing good and so i took her in my humble place, she was trying to say "thank you", but I wasnt really in the mood. Already had probably enough action the past days.

Next morning she really rocked me and TOLD me to pay for services, making quite a fuzz! . Gave her a 100 for food and kicked her out. I was totally baffled.

Yeah, yeah I know, could have kicked her out with nothing. But probably hungry.

The people, you meet... sigh.

Another story of meeting and talking to a girl. Came to one point she asked some money for food, she was really hungry, it seems. Gave her some and said enjoy it

She bought some simple food and came back to gave back left over money.

How much do you REALLY know about homeless and destitute prostitutes?

Are you able to feel empathy for these people.

And, have your read....

Of Human Bondage?

Maugham has always been one of my favorite authors, since my early youth.

And, no doubt, there must be some correlation between my reading of Maugham and my empathy for prostitutes.

Not all prostitutes, though.

I have had far more empathy for Asian prostitutes, particularly East Asian ones.

What about you?

Have you reached out to any?

Have you befriended any?

I have.

But not recently.

If you were to read ALL of Somerset Maugham, then you might learn something useful, is my thinking.
