BANGKOK, Oct 6 (TNA) – One million baht in compensation has been approved for each victim who was killed in the shooting at the Siam Paragon mall on Oct3.

 

Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin, who is the Chairman of the Committee for Disaster Relief Fund, Office of the Prime Minister said the recent shooting incident at Siam Paragon shopping mall resulting in two fatalities, including one Chinese tourist and one Myanmar national, and 5 injured individuals.

 

He acknowledged that this was a shocking event that had a significant impact on tourism and the country’s image.

It continually astonishes me how a monetary value is so readily placed on life here, and when it is, it's an amount that could considered quite insulting.

 

I have to wonder what the thought process is behind this ??...  empathy to help the victims families with funeral costs etc ?... compensation for losing a family earner ?

 

Is the act of providing compensation some form of admittance that authorities made mistakes, or is the compensation beyond that and simply an act of benevolence ?

Less than $30,000 is poor compensation for the two young girls that saw their mum being killed.

Ok, so far, I understand that.

But will only the victims of this crime get that money? Or all victims of all crimes?

And do they all get the same amount?

Typical Thai authourity response. Lets give them some money. Shows we care!

But it doesn't.

 

It shows how shallow and insensitive they are. Also they never understand life outside their own universe, Thailand.

and by paying out a million baht to each of the victims that impact and more importantly the country's image would not be seen to be tarnished ..strange thought process indeed!

Families of those who died in mall shooting to get ฿6.2m compensation each
 

 

The families of the two people who were killed in the Siam Paragon shooting will each receive 6.2 million baht in compensation from the Thai government and the mall’s owners, while the injured will each receive 350,000 baht each.

 

Of the 6.2 million baht for the families of the Chinese and Myanmar nationals, 1.2 million baht will from the government and the rest from the owners of the mall, who will also contribute 300,000 baht each for the injured, in addition to the 50,000 baht from the government, according to Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol.

 

Moreover, a private donor has offered to contribute one million baht to the state, to be used to compensate the victims.

One was Chinese, the other Myanmar.

I guess the government feels this will help potential tourists to keep coming to Thailand.

It's not the movie... it's reality.

When you actually work it out in your own currency, the payout is a but of an insult. Thailand is hardly going to get those chinese back with a token payout

The same. One victim was from Myanmar.

6.2 million baht each .....    that's better than 1 million baht and alot more than getting nothing  ......

Why is it the government's job to pay compensation AKA blood money?

They could have forced the parents to pay.

Payouts for terrible things in Thailand also very often seem to be for one million.......One million baht that is........

 

One million baht is a whopping 1/30th of 1 million dollars.......

What is the relevance of US compensation settlements in Thailand?   Are you claiming that the US government pays $1m compensation to shooting victims' families without a suit in court being filed?   In which cases has that happened?

1M Baht is only A$43,000, but 6.2M bht is about A$270,000 and seems much more

reasonable. I bet they would all rather "have the person back" but at least it is not an insult.

Remember no Chinese 14yo boy can get a gun, like in most sane places, so one must also

blame guns themselves. Since Australia adopted such harsh gun control, we have had a mass shooting in NZ and maybe a couple of small shootings with low caliber guns in last many years.. America has about SIX HUNDRED "active shooters" per year!!?? How many in Thailand? But obviously strict gun control is the answer. Only cops and criminals should have access to hand guns.
