Woman jailed for six months for offensive remarks about former PM Prayut

The elderly woman who hurled verbal abuse at then Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, during his visit to Ban Pong district in Ratchaburi in March this year, was sentenced to six months and 10 days in jail and fined 1,000 baht today (Tuesday), without suspension, by the Ratchaburi District Court.

In imposing the sentence on the defendant, popularly known in the district as “Pa Na Ban Pong”, the court ruled that she had encroached on the security zone maintained around the prime minister and his entourage.

Police had asked the defendant to leave, but she resisted, said the court, adding that she did not repent for her actions but threatened to sue the officials who were performing their duty at the scene in a manner indicating her disrespect for the law.

  • Amazing. She will spend more time in prison for shouting abuse at the then self appointed prime minister than someone responsible for the killing of thousands. ????

  • I would be jailed for fifty thousand years for my thoughts on Prayut ????

  • She could claim heart palpitations and get airlifted to a room next to Thaksin.

The "Powers That Be" had held that Prayut's military coup as legal and granted immunity. Then subsequently held that Prayut wasn't the PM for four years following the coup. When is there ever respect for the Thai People?

Give her a medal not six months.

Selective application of the law, with significant punishment, keeps the public in line.

This way you only have to jail a small percentage of the population, while frightening the rest into self-censorship.

All individual rights "guaranteed" (cough) by the Constitution are severely limited, and open to "interpretation".

Section 34. A person shall enjoy the liberty to express opinions, make speeches, write, print, publicise and express by other means. The restriction of such liberty shall not be imposed, except by virtue of the provisions of law specifically enacted for the purpose of maintaining the security of the State, protecting the rights or liberties of other persons, maintaining public order or good morals, or protecting the health of the people.

So Thais have the right of free speech as long as they don't say anything.

I wonder what a 'Speakers' Corner' would look like in Thailand?

(Some Non-UK citizens may have to Google Speakers' Corner?)

A Speakers' Corner is an area where free speech open-air public speaking,

debate, and discussion are allowed. The original and best known is in the north-east

corner of Hyde Park in London - England

It would seem that very little is a Taboo on Speakers Corner.

Loads and loads of it on YouTube ... ... ...

Here's a snippet:

This is what hillary wants to do in the USA to anyone who voted against her... sort of like the reeducation camps after WWII and the Vietnam War... except this time in the USA against it's citizens.

Nurse, he is out of his bed gain!

Will she get any time off for good behaviour? Perhaps knock off the odd 10 days.

Prayuth must be feeling so proud of himself, couldn't even stand up to an elderly woman, He  has always been a disgusting worm. (no disrespect to worms intended)

Has he moved out of the barracks yet? has his money been declared after leaving office yet? Why is he being left alone by the press?

Lets hope this lady gets a hero's welcome inside.

Like the attitude adjustment camps set up by Prayuth, after he committed treason, you mean?. Least we forget.

I'm not keen on 'King's pardons'. Much prefer a 'not guilty'.

I hope she tells the prison authorities she is feeling very sick she might get airlifted to the hospital as she is very elderly apparently she has been released on bail for 30,000 baht she also shaved her head outside the court as a protest to be given such a long sentence for speaking her mind

But unfortunately she was guilty as charged, 8hrs max community service would have been more of a fitting sentence.

This had absolutely nothing to do with security. It was all about repression, showing the people they have no voice and a cruel, over reaching judiciary that is still controlled by the extremely toxic army.

Thailand joins Burma, Cambodia, Russia, China, Saudi, Vietnam, Ethiopia, North Korea, Cuba, Iran and Azerbaijan as a nation that is intolerant of telling it like it is. Shame in the judiciary. Shame on the army. All moral authority is gone, baby gone.

She could claim anything, but its extremely doubtful anyone would listen, unless she has a few billion stashes somewhere?????

Sad day for free speech both here and in the UK where Suella has said it is illegal to wave a Palestinian flag (but not of course, an Israeli flag).

Maybe she has high blood pressure and anxiety she can then get the room next to Thaksin.

Another Martyr for the MFP and those against the mlitary.
