I’ve got both and they work perfectly well. Downloaded from Apple though not Google Play. Don’t need to be in UK or use VPN

Not so with TunnelBear. I have to log in each and every time I need to use it.

If playstore or appstore don't work , try Aptoide, or similar source. Works for me to get blocked banking app updates, but it might take a few days for the updated version to appear.

Usually they make it a simple process to login, maybe save a password if necessary
