On November 3, 2023, in Bangkok’s Yan Nawa district, a man's attempt to rob a gold shop with an iron bar was thwarted.

Lieutenant Police Watchai, along with his team, responded to an emergency call at the mouth of Sathupradit 58 Alley, where the crime took place at Mongkol Gold Shop, reported Siam Rath.

The storefront glass was shattered, and display cases within were found broken. The perpetrator, identified as 33-year-old Sompat, wielded a weapon resembling a knife and was captured by locals and the store's owner as he tried to escape along Rama III Road.

Watcharapol Nakwatchara, the owner's nephew, recounted the suspect's odd behavior prior to the incident, loitering and being ousted from a nearby motorcycle taxi stand for his suspicious behaviour.

The suspect had attempted to sell fake gold at the store and demanded 20 baht after being refused service. In a fit of rage, he grabbed a triangular iron bar, smashed the display case, and took a gold ring. His escape was impeded by the shop's automatic lock system, forcing him to break the glass door with the bar.

After a chase extending over a kilometer, the culprit was apprehended near Wat Dokmai.

Initially uncooperative and without identification, he was detained for further questioning and drug testing at Bang Phongphang Police Station. The stolen ring remains unrecovered as authorities proceed with legal action.
