What's your meaning of Nature vs Nurture?

Who made you now as a person Psychology

One says the way you brought up ,but ....think this way , did your job make you that way in nuture eg someone was a police officer in New York for 30years would end up with Resilience a that if he hadn't been brought up that way by parents before he went into being a cop

And another Are children brought up by their parents to be anti social or is it just nature ?

What about with psychological issues?

Today I watched a youngish lady get angry at a elderly women for taking too long to self scan her groceries ,the young lady slammed her groceries on the scanner machine I guess out of frustration because the old woman was taking too long.

I watched the young lady making huffing noises with anxiety, how did she become like that???

Is she like that because of Nature or Nurture?

Nature or Nurture ,what makes you psychological, physically etc ... before you say it's the "parents" with a teenagers "future " and blame it on the parents ...

Can someone even a Adult be "nurtured" into being that way ?

psychological at its greatest they can't even answer

It's a very complicated psychological subject that apparently not even psychologists can answer

Making daft posts... Nature.

Not knowing how daft the posts are... Nurture.

Unfortunately you have limited perception and that's by nature or Nurture in thinking everyone knows what the word "daft" means .

So I Will test your theory out in Australia and say this word to everyone I meet today ,no one will have a clue what I'm talking about , probably thinking I'm calling things deaf ,why? , because your nuture into thinking we all know brought up by your parents and work colleagues who used this word ,and it's the same with the word "dogs <deleted>" in which I saw a fight between a Aussie guy and a pommy guy up in Soi Bukhao because the Aussie was saying the pommys guy called him a Dogs balls

Back in the UK I couldn't manage the self serve scanner, so the security guard did it for me.

Sounds like Australia is an awful place, mind you, i don't expect much from the descendants of criminals.

It's in their NATURE!

These self service scanners I believe have yet to hit Thailand?

Time will come though

It's an awful place because so many whinging Poms seem to finish up there, and then proceed to bore us sh!tless with their pining for the Mother Country.

One can't do much about their genetic inheritance. Parents can do a lot with the moral compass they give their kids.

They have them in TOPS.

Supermarkets in Australia are pulling back from them, too many issues.

Ah, an age old question and reams of studies done. Only certain folks lean toward demanding an either/or, yes/no, right/wrong answer in a world of grey areas in life. So ... the answer is both. I was born in the Philly area of South Jersey where my DNA goes back before the founding of the country. Thus I grew up with the predominant English as my native language (although through nurture ... I am bi-lingual knowing both "youse guys" and "y'all" ha!). Being of WASP background was raised as a Christian (although through nature again, my education and experience has outgrown this. Had I been born in Japan, it would have been Japanese and Shinto , adding Buddhism along the way and perhaps Christianity as the culture allows for a more inclusive approach (raised American, the culture leans toward picking one, any one but just one). Saudi Arabia? Arabic and Islam ... On occasion over my 41 years of teaching, I oft pointed this out to my students also citing my nature inherited nearsightedness (thanks Mom) and cholesterol heart issues (thanks, Dad). the kind of academic discussion enjoyed along with a glass of red wine (for the heart, of course).

Readily available in the supermarkets when we stayed on Koh Samui two years ago. As in the USA, I go to the cashier for checkout in support of having a working middle call person earning a living. Curmudgeon?

Nature .... is to nurture, you're over complicating this :coffee1:

No, nature is being born like that and nurture is molding the child, IMO.

Problem is "nurture" is IMO just lovie BS, and most parents allow nature to rule. Just sounds better saying they "nurture" their children, when they actually allow the sprogs to do whatever they like.

I didn't vote for either option.

Americans IMO are sex mad, as they have a HUGE porn industry and a thriving pimp prostitution industry which is IMO why they equate sport with sex.

I think nurture plays a part but it's mostly nature.  Some examples from my life.  First, I'm gay, and I was born gay.  Nurture had nothing to do with my sexual orientation.  I have 5 siblings, all straight, all brought up with the same nurture I had.  I knew I was gay before I even knew what gay was.  Nature, not nurture.

I also have what is called mixed-handedness, which is somewhat different from being left-handed or ambidextrous.  In my case, I use my left or right hand depending on the task.  I eat and write with my left hand--except, if I'm writing on a blackboard, I use my right hand.  Play sports right-handed.  When I am painting, I use a paint brush with my left hand and a paint roller with my right hand.  Use tools and scissors with my right hand.  It's not a conscious decision to use one hand or the other, it just happens naturally without any thought.  Nature, not nurture.

Recently, I was diagnosed with a very high calcium plaque score (CAC) for my heart arteries.  Since 2010, my partner and I have lived together in Thailand.  Neither of us smokes and we both rarely drink alcohol.  Both go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week.  He works at home with his job and we have eaten practically the same diet for the past 13 years, with some exceptions when we eat out--but even then we often order 3 dishes and share.   Eating about the same diet for years, my CAC score very high, his very low.  Nature, not nurture.

I'm under the impression that 'nurture' goes beyond how parents raise children. It's everything they encounter in their environment that effects the way they are molded as they grow up and throughout life. The friends they have, family, where they live, experiences good and bad, etc..

Ha! Lighten your load ... pertinent to this topic. Tonight rewatching the movie, "Trading Places" dealing directly with the question at hand. Don Ameche, Ralph Bellamy, Dan Ackroyd, Eddie Murphy. It is part of my Christmas themed movies rewatched this time of year culminating with George C. Scott as Scrooge on Christmas Eve ,...

IMO that's just life. Nurture indicates a degree of "caring", and IMO for most on the planet nobody gives a monkey's about anyone not family.
