'Told', 'suggested', 'advised'. How about 'ordered'?

He can suggest and advise until he is blue in the face. He is the front man for a Parliamentary committee, no executive power. That lies in the hands of the government, which whilst in power because of what might properly be described as a democratic fudge, has considerably more electoral legitimacy than his party! Anyway his committee is concerned with Police affairs, treatment of high profile prisoners once "convicted and sentenced" is outside his remit.

What is more, he is posturing on behalf of a party whose slide into political irrelevance began when they were boosted into power, despite losing the election back in 2008, and continued to slide when, unable to win further elections they effectively supported a military coup which cancelled elections and put a Junta in government.

Once the voice of Bangkok and the younger educated middle class, (oops, what happened there?),a viable and credible alternative to Thaksin,  they are now reliant on their (corrupt) regional power base in some southern provinces, and their links to the "establishment" whose influence is also beginning to fail!

The so called barracks they are referring to is likely a 2,000 sf suite, with a 77inch OLED, a home theater, a cook, maid, and high end latex mattresses. Real punishment. You support us and sell out your heart, soul and party, and we will take care of you. After all, we are the army and we are above any and all laws. You can't even write a critical article about is, without getting locked up. Ha!

I stumbled across an advertisement for one of those latex maids whilst researching Alice in Wonderland on the Internet! I can't imagine what Thaksin could want with one...

Average man knows and is used to it. It's perfectly normal and the way of life in Thailand. They don't expect anything different. It's part of being Thai. And, now and then, it becomes too much and they explode into uncontrolled violence when the pressure cooker of holding their resentment in gets too much.

Yes, it's a fascinating culture!

So far they have never "exploded into uncontrolled violence", while there were a few minor skirmishes. But this could be down the road soon.

I'm ambivalent about the guy myself, having started working in Thailand after his tenure in power.

But spending a few extra baht to make sure he doesn't get (for example) knifed in the shower is probably worth it, just to prevent the mayhem if that were to happen.

I used to be but have come to realise he’s no different. As for knifing in the shower, he’d never be among gen pop.
But yes, forget the barracks, let’s have the prik proper banged up.

Within the barracks compounds there are usually several ultra-luxurious mansions replete with maids, butlers et al, these are reserved for senior generals and their families.

Anyone who thinks this isn't what Thaksin wouldn't be given as his "barracks" doesn't know Thailand very well.

Chaichana Dejdecho advised the Corrections Department to find army barracks somewhere to detain Thaksin in lieu of Police Hospital, given a recently-issued regulation of the agency to “detain” convicts outside of a prison.

Woops. the regulation kicked in (how auspicious), woops they can move him now anywhere he wants. "Find an army barracks somewhere", already found, approved and customized long before "the regulation kicked in". Here is a cherry-on-top idea: why don't you clowns make the "de facto Pheu Thai Leader-cum-Convict" an Honorary General complete with "de facto recruits-cum-servitors"...

on a side note: look how fast the government can move when it really wants something. If they would tackle the PM2.5 crisis with a similar vigor, their legitimacy rating would soar...

Like my Thai rellies say, while you can still buy a something bowl for 30 baht, find a tree for a hammock and never be cold, nothing will change here.

There is no boiling pot/pressure cooker ready to go, they're just tired of it all. They've been shown multiple times these last few years just where their true place is in the scheme of things.

Bent knee, Bowed head.

Shorten the rope, fascinating watching them hang themselves in public view!! Wake up average man, you are being walked on! But then again, watching that is just as entertaining! :whistling:

The average Thai, while maybe not liking him or agreeing with what is happening with him and his punishment or other Hi So privileged, dont really care enough because their daily life never changes and hasn't in decades. So there's never any impact on them that changes anything, if you have nothing and lose nothing it's status quo. when you live a subsistence life and have for generations you become complacent, and your main concern is how do I eat today and maybe tomorrow. Next week, month or year never comes into the picture.  The closest its come to real action was the demonstrations and take over in the BKK parks that generated the last coup to occur. The more recent demos by younger thais evaporated during the elections when they thought there was change coming.

Chaichana said any army barracks usually have many bunks, ample living quarters and a wide, open area in which the 74-year-old Thaksin could exercise daily or even undergo a basic training course like soldiers.

he is supposed to be in jail

PT made a deal with the army. It is that simple. He will be treated very well. There should be benefits when you sell out your party, betray your supporters and the nation, and surrender your soul.

Oh really? What would you call this? A minor skirmish? You either know nothing of Thai history or have a very short memory.

It's amazing how much of this Thais will take.

They do nowadays. The Tiktok generation has larger fish/clips to fry. There were times when millions would have been hitting the streets. Brought down the military government of General Suchinda.

Seriously? Do they think everyone is an idiot?  He will be staying in quarters reserved for voting generals (lots of those in the Thai Army(
