My son has managed to lock his door and the keys are, I suspect, inside the room. We have been trying to pick the lock with no success for ages. I really don't want to destroy it but I am so frustrated now that I feel like smashing the door down with a sledge hammer! :o

I have no idea about locksmiths in this part of the island. Anyone in Phuket with that knowledge? Failing that, anyone with knowledge of how to pick a lock? It is a regular push button door knob that you find on most interior doors.

Going through the window is not an option as there are security bars and the spaces are too small to fit through. I can't see the keys on any surface in the room where we could possibly hook them out. There is no trapdoor in the ceiling either that we could get through the roof.

There must be a way to get in on our own. I am open for any and all suggestions please!! HELP!!

If you can slip a knife into the area of the latch you can often open that way (the old credit card trick). But most security bars are quite easy to take off - a couple of minutes to remove the screws.

As you only need to turn the inside knob a bit to release the lock if you can stick a pole in from window with some double sided tape on it you might be able to release that way.

Thanks so much for all the replies but the problem is now sorted. I went down to the Chalong Circle and there is a locksmith outside the photo shop by KL mart. He came to my house and had it sorted out in about 10 minutes.

Before going to him, I thought of removing the hinges, but they were inside. I also thought of removing the burgler bars from the windows but that would have been a major mission. There was no way of removing the door knob that I could see except bashing it with a hammer.

I would recommend this guy if you ever have this problem. He charged me 200 baht for coming out. I was willing to pay anything, I was so desperate. I have told my son it will come out of his pocket money.

Thanks again! :o

I've just realized the irony of having 3 moderators commenting on how to open locked doors when I found this how to do video on youtube

You're watching youtube in Thailand??? Tut, tut! :o

My son does it often. If you have an old credit, video card etc. Force it down into the latch and turn the handle a few time. Easy just like the movies.

I realize that this is after the fact, but might help someone out in the future...

Most interior door or "privacy" locks don't need a key. There will be a small hole in the center of the knob. Straightening out the hook end of a coat hanger and pushing it straight in to the hole on the doorknob will pop the button on the inside.

Any other straight, strong object that will fit in the hole - like a small screwdriver, or a nail works fine too. Mom used to keep an appropriate sized nail on top of the bathroom doorframe in order to pop the door when we were locked out (or in)!

You have to have access to the inside knob to remove it. Outside knobs are protected from removal.

that will learn you - next time you fit a door knob make sure you put it the correct way around so that you can open it with a screwdriver if necessary.

i learnt the hard way and have lost 2 children due to this.

if only i had paid attention after the first one

You only think its their own home because they said so.

So it could well be B&E!

I think you'll find from the responses of the moderators that they took the comment in the humor it was intended.

OK so I am very curious to know:

1. Were you looking for anything in particular?

2. What did you find?

Or was it mainly the principle of the thing, I could understand that.

Just place a small amount of C4 near the lock, detonate and it will unlock any door.

Machine guns ore stuff like that you see in the movies will not work.
