The Ministry of Culture is gearing up to propose the inclusion of Thai traditional dress in UNESCO‘s prestigious intangible cultural heritage listings.

The visionary behind this move is none other than Kowit Pakamart, the director-general of the Department of Cultural Promotion.

To pave the way for this historic proposal, the department recently orchestrated a vibrant brainstorming session at the Thailand Cultural Centre. Here, key players involved in a project dedicated to compiling information on Thai traditional costumes gathered to shape the narrative of Thailand’s rich cultural tapestry.

Kowit, the driving force behind this initiative, passionately expressed the unparalleled uniqueness of Thai traditional dresses. He highlighted their distinctive designs and materials, showcasing an unparalleled craftsmanship that mirrors the diverse regions of the nation.

Everything in Thailand must be on the Unesco Heritage list.. the food, the dress, the monuments, the events... but in fact Thailand was in  former times several kingdoms and mostly Khmer based.... claiming Angkor Wat was an example that Thailand wanted but did not owned

Thai culture is a fusion of Sanskrit and Khmer.  From their etiquette at the royal court, customs, dance, dress, muay Thai , temple designs, personal names, towns/ cities, festivals and everything else in between.  It's has some or entire elements from those two cultures.

I was under the impression that "traditional" the females went topless, as depicted in many photos, paintings, and even temple murals.

Oh, I hope so.  Much prefer that to listed under UNESCO :-)

They’ll have khao pat on the list next if they haven’t already. 😋

To be fair the ladies do look good when attired in traditional garb. I do, however, prefer the Vietnamese ao dai in white look.
