When the dreams become violent, the whole America becomes hostile towards him even tho he did nothing wrong to anyone in real life.  My wife started feeling sorry for good old Nic, almost crying. "Why they do this to him! Paced in the style of being John Malkovich if you like that stuff.  I must admit I like Cage more and more as he gets older.
