Hi,

I have to buy 2 TV's (21" or 29") in September and I was curious am I better dealing with stores like Big C or Tesco or someone said they have a warehouse wholesale type of store called Makro, so maybe that would be the best place. I will be buying on in Bangkok for myself and one in Surin for my future mother-in-law. The one in Surin is the one I'll buy first and this is the one I was more concerned with first. I have seen some smaller electronic stores near the markets where my mother-in-law lives but my idea is I'll get better service at the bigger stores. I won't be in Thailand till September but I figure a little research prior wouldn't hurt. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

As always.....THANKS,

Tesco's is a no no for me,i bought a dvd player there once,it soon was broken, they sent it for repair,6 months later still no sign of it.They where most unhelpful and finaly they gave me a new one after standing in the shop for 4 hours complaining, they had lost the first one.The smaller shops near your mother in laws may be more helpful and have probably been there many years.Big C i found to be much better service..

Am also interested in the info that may be offered here.

Big shops like Carrefour/Macro etc vs. smaller more specialized ones for

1) price, 2) after sales service, 3) good and/or latest models

(Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai is my area - but I don't want to hijack the OP's thread by asking for necessarily local info)

Hi,

Don't worry about feeling like your hijacking my thread, we all learn from one another. I know stores like Big C is like Walmart here in the states and if someone has a bad experience with a particular store, it's best to hear about it before spending 7,000 baht on a particular electronic item. Plus, places like Chiang Mai, bangkok, Surin or Pattaya, they're all similar in that they all have the big stores. I am weary of going to the small Mom and Pop type stores only because if something goes wrong, I can't see myself going in and fighting with them when my Thai is nill. So I depend on people like on these forums to help with the advice. So if you need to ask questions concerning your situation in Chiang Mai.....ask away!

Have a GREAT weekend,

Nhscotsman, Both Big C and Makro carry a good range although I have not had the need to return anything to either store so I cannot advise on their after sales service. Another alternative to the big stores is the family run "Sony Shop' (that is what we call it anyway) and that is located opposite the main entrance to the bus station. They carry a good range of branded TV's, especially Sony, and a whole host of other electrical appliances and air conditioning. They are always pleasant to do business with and they are quite good with their after sales service.

I saw the most variety in TV's at the Mall 6 (Ngamong Wan). They had some of the lower budget companies selling their products there, and some 32" hdtv's were going for like 17k baht if I remember correctly. Just look at malls that are outside of the metropolis area and the prices will be cheaper. :o
