The Ministry of Public Health held a meeting today, February 15, to deliberate on the potential abolition of the time restriction for alcohol sales, currently set between 11am and 2pm. However, the meeting failed to reach a clear conclusion.

The Public Health Minister, Chonlnan Srikaew, reported that the proposal to cancel the time limit for alcohol sales was submitted to the ministry and the Office of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission. Despite objections from various groups, a meeting must be held to explore the possibility of lifting the restrictions.

Cholnan ensured that he and other relevant departments would listen to public opinions and prioritise public health and safety.

The meeting to discuss the topic was held today, February 15, but there was no clear conclusion or direction launched from the authorities.

The Director General of the Disease Control Department, Thongchai Kiratihattayakorn, stated that the ministry had not yet decided on the removal of the time limit. Thongchai said the ministry had only health data but did not have business and economic data, so they were unable to consider the matter thoroughly.

But I thought they had introduced measures ( police in hi-vis jackets ) to stop all road accidents . What happened that ?

What a useless law..

The whole purpose of the law is to prevent abuse of alcohol ...

Actually, if they really want to ban alcohol, to prevent accidents, abuse .etc, they should impose the ban at a time when there are lots of DUI, abuse -  so the perfect time for such ban should be from 7pm to midnight ...hahahahaha.. LOLOL

I concur. Makes no sense. Serves no purpose and has no benefits. Any benefits are a figment of someone’s distorted imagination.

Please, the law was introduced many years ago to stop civil servants from drinking during the work day. It had nothing to do with public health. Dump it.

Of course, data is available. Just ask those wonderful people at TAT.

Somebody with half a brain and some power needs to bypass the silliness (meetings with whom about what?) and make it happen. Not selling at these times DOES NOT STOP PEOPLE DRINKING; one just can’t buy at 7-11 and big stores. Restaurants and bars still serve it, other shops still sell it, people have caches of the stuff, people still DUI at these times and crash. All it does is frustrate and perplex tourists who want an afternoon livener while make Thailand look stupid and backward. The powers that be are just too afraid to pull the pin.

I cannot think of a place where tourists CAN'T get an afternoon drink! Yesterday afternoon I went on a bar crawl in Pattaya...never noticed any restrictions as this morning's headache attests🙄🤔

",..,alcohol curfew talks hit a hiccup.."

yeah, very clever  brilliant play on words.

The BP really are a class act.

A lot of tourists don't want to pay bar prices, which is fair enough. They also like to buy cheap "travellers" from the Seven and then wander around the streets with the bottle in their hand like lo-sos 😉

PS. I used to do that when I was a backpacker. I was quite partial to the small cans of "Singha Draft". Of course, now that I'm older I frown upon such behaviour. Tsk tsk 😅

Huh? Article is from "TT", not BP.

I've seen end on end of countless times the motorbike Taxi drivers just before 11:00am STOCKING UP BIG TIME........I actually thought that time was for praying and going to the temples and spiritual practices......

Downtown Riyadh......

I found it puzzling the 4am closure of entertainment venues got a priority over the liberation of afternoon alcohol sales.... I thought the latter seemed to make more sense.

Interesting that there is a curfew on alcohol sales but not on cannabis sales

And cannabis seems more openly on display than tobacco products!

Dare I refer to you as "slightly pedantic"? 😄

I sort of agree with your second sentence....

Mostly pedantic and highly cynical perhaps.

One of the most pressing dilemma's for the Thai government today, and one they are seemingly unable to resolve: Can we allow a person to buy a beer at 3pm.

Everyone knows that widget shops that don't sell widgets from 2-5 have the highest profit margins. Why? Because Buddha told me.

"Thongchai said the number of accidents did not significantly increase after allowing entertainment venues in assigned areas to stay open until 4am.

Nevertheless, accidents related to drunk driving increased by 25% following the extension of opening hours."

The number of accidents didn't increase, but it did increase? Am I missing something?

I also have no idea how drunk driving in the wee hours after a night of boozing has any connection to what might happen for three hours in the middle of the afternoon.

Thai Government at its best... No information no preparing and no data, but talking waste time and nothing really happened. Result they have shown that they want to do something about it but not yet... same the gaymarriage, sound and airpollution, and name it..They want to be a tourist hotspot, but no efforts can be made as nobody want a real change

Stupid and Backward is the norm here.

Alcohol also has medicinal properties, it expands blood vessels especially Brandy. When I worked in vascular surgery we kept bottles of Brandy, Vodka and other spirits in the medicine trolley. They were dispensed in 30ml doses 3 to 4 times a day to patients with severe vascular problems. It was so tempting when i dispensed them to get a shot for myself especially on the night shift, fortunately I never did, the spectre of being struck off for drug abuse prevented me doing so.🙂
