Opinion Russian Teacher to Thais: Drop ‘Farang’ if 'Ni Hao' Offends
I had exactly that conversation with a girlfriend yesterday. I recalled hearing my ex MIL ask "does the farang want to eat" in Thai. She had no idea that I knew what she'd said. I told her that I am a person and I have a name, how would she like it if I said "does the Thai want to eat". The term farang' can be offensive and it can be bloody annoying. It used to be that it was often used offensively by Thais but its become so common these days that I think it rarely is used offensively. It would be far better though, if they just simply stopped it - why do we have to have a 'label'? We all have a name. Its become so common now that I often hear Westerners using it and dropping the R for an L in the typical Thai mispronunciation way - falang. Upshot is, I must have explained it pretty well as my girl said fully understood and she would stop using the term - advising her family to do the same. -

China warns ,don’t appease trump
In this issue, China looks like in a lot more advantageous position. Today, US retail giant cannot fill their shelves without their products. And that is because of what US mega corporation started for own gain, as early as since 1970s. They shifted their factories overseas to reduce the cost of production. In 2000, US govt gave China the status of the Most Favored Nation, in terms of foreign trade. And it has been continued by successive US administrations. It is their policies US and its big companies that made China this big and influential. If American makers remained on their soil as it used to be, it didn't happen. Even if US of A boycotts Chinese goods, they only need to divert their export somewhere else(e.g. Asia). Asia today, has got 4.83 billion people(60% of the world's population). It is not the matter of whether I like or not like China, it is just a fact.
