Criminal referrals create new headaches for GOP impeachment investigators

As Republican lawmakers grapple with the direction of their impeachment investigation against President Biden, the possibility of pursuing criminal referrals to the Justice Department has emerged as an alternative course of action. This shift in strategy, while providing an off-ramp for a struggling investigation, presents its own set of challenges and uncertainties.

The GOP probe has faced mounting skepticism within the party, with concerns raised about the lack of clarity regarding potential illegal conduct by the president or his family. Some Republican lawmakers question whether the investigation will ever culminate in a vote, given the doubts among key GOP members. Criminal referrals offer a way to sidestep a potential embarrassment on the House floor, akin to the GOP's initial failure to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

However, pursuing criminal referrals requires Republicans to meticulously detail the alleged crimes committed by the Biden family, citing specific statutes and presenting evidence. This task is fraught with difficulty and may prove more challenging than the impeachment process itself—a point that Democrats are keen to emphasize.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the Oversight and Accountability Committee, has criticized the GOP's pivot towards criminal referrals, highlighting the need for concrete evidence to support such actions. Meanwhile, House Oversight Chair James Comer has hinted at this approach as the "best path" for accountability, suggesting a shift in focus towards holding individuals accountable for wrongdoing.

Yet, criminal referrals would necessitate convincing not only House Republicans but also seasoned attorneys within the Justice Department, who would assess the viability of pursuing charges in court. Moreover, the targets of such referrals remain uncertain, ranging from President Biden himself to his family members and associates, including his son Hunter Biden.

Critics argue that many individuals eyed by the GOP for criminal charges have already been prosecuted by the Justice Department for various offenses. Hunter Biden, in particular, has faced scrutiny and charges related to tax fraud and other financial crimes. However, Republicans contend that additional accountability measures are warranted, especially given the perceived leniency towards Biden associates compared to their associates.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the feasibility of criminal referrals, Republican leaders maintain that all options are being considered. However, not all Republicans are fully on board with this approach, with some expressing caution and emphasizing the need for careful analysis before pursuing such actions.

Ultimately, the potential pursuit of criminal referrals underscores the complexities and challenges inherent in the GOP's impeachment investigation. While some Republicans view it as a means of holding the Biden family accountable, others question its efficacy and the availability of sufficient evidence to support such actions. As the investigation continues, the debate over the appropriate course of action is likely to persist, reflecting the broader partisan divide in Congress.

With highly implicated characters like Hunter Biden moaning about having a public hearing, and then not showing up for the one arranged, it's not really surprising that the republicans might go down this route.

Catch up on the news, maybe change channels from "We distort, you deride"....  Hunter did  testify before Repub committee behind closed doors. He wanted to testify in open hearing so that the public and press could hear it all, not the erroneous, distorted wordings Republicans are known for.

Upon viewing numerous GOP hearings, it seems they have surfaced more queries and furnished more proof of wrongdoing by Trump and his associates in maintaining this six-year deception than by Biden.

Lev Parnas, found guilty of assisting Trump, is just one of the many hundreds of supporters who have been imprisoned since Trump’s presidency commenced in 2017.

Some considered ‘the best people’ often find themselves labeled as ‘unreliable’ witnesses by the right when they realize they’ve been misled and choose to testify against Trump, a situation that mirrors Michael Cohen’s.

Lev Parnas has leveled accusations against former President Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and certain allies in Congress and the media, charging them with spreading misinformation for personal benefit, which he believes undermines national integrity.

He alleges that the Justice Department, under former Attorney General Bill Barr, conspired to protect Trump and silence Parnas to prevent impeachment.

Parnas also contends that the corruption allegations against the Biden family in Ukraine are baseless and are the product of Russian disinformation.

Elsewhere, the contradiction of why the GOP have not investigated corruption within the Trump family, particularly the unexplained $2 billion ‘gift’ from MBS to Jared Kushner, was also highlighted.

Seems Comer and Jordan are openly collaborating with Putin to meddle with the 2024 Elections.

Clearly, if ‘criminal referrals’ are warranted for the Biden family they are indeed required for Trump et alia.

Your story is from a nearly month ago and concerned  a closed door interview. Hunter Biden has yet to survive a hearing.

He refused and was AWOL for the public hearing last week, when his testimony was strongly challenged by Tony Bobulinski.

So it's you who needs to catch up.

A really weak  example of deflection. The hearing is about the Bidens, not Trump.

The hearings are about making a false equivalence between Trump and Biden.

Seems the OP source quotes Trump at least five times, making the topic relevant to Trump as well as Biden.

Nevertheless, this is all about Trump as Biden's impeachment was predicated solely on his orders.

Since you're up to speed on absolutely everything, and as infallible as the messiah trump, perhaps you can explain how jared got 666 5th Ave refinanced by the Govt of Qatar---while he was ostensibly serving as Senior Adviser to My Father-in-Law. The building had a market value of $700 and the debt was $1.4 billion, which is to say Deep State-level underwater. He also had a balloon payment of $1.2 billion on it, but the Qatar refinancing took care of that. "Coincidentally", the sanctions Qatar was under somehow were removed a few days after the refinancing.

Are Qataris as dumb as a trumper? Why would they put over a $billion into a building with a market value of only $700 million---which has since fallen farther as vacancy rates in NYC ratchet up due to 'work from home', AI, and a general increase in efficiency?

Oh, and Ivanka was awarded 37 trademarks by China was she was serving as yet another Senior Nepoadviser to the President.

Uday donny, jr and Qusay Eric were sclelpping the family name in India and the UAE while daddy was playing President. That seems to fit the definition of influence peddling.

After trump was soundly defeated in 2020, jared still 'somehow' was awarded $2 billion of Saudi funds to manage, despite the fact he had never managed money. Maybe it would be easier to find an actual crime if the House Repubs went after the trump family?
