CCTV footage from the mayhem and chaos on Tuesday at a city centre hotel in Phuket. (Inset) Mr Tolstov attacked people, including security guards at the hotel. Finally, police used a taser gun to stun and collapse the marauding Russian.

Rabid Russian rampage in Phuket. Tourist tasered by police after hotel havoc. A drunken Russian tourist, Mr Aleksandr Tolstov, triggered chaos in Phuket, assaulting multiple people at a hotel. Three officers intervened but had to resort to a taser to subdue him. Now facing criminal charges.

A Russian tourist is facing criminal charges and is being held by Karon Police after a furious outburst of violence in the centre of Phuket on Tuesday. The crazed Russian man, wearing nothing but summer trunks tore into security staff and later police at a local hotel. Finally, police were forced to use a Taser gun to incapacitate the rabid young man and prevent further conflict.

There has been another incident of outrageous behaviour by a foreigner in Phuket. On Tuesday, police were forced to use a Taser gun to overpower a young Russian man who attacked multiple people at a hotel.

The man, half-naked, appeared to go berserk after an altercation with another tourist.

The Russian, dressed in nothing but what appeared to be summer trunks, attacked both security at the hotel and afterwards local police for Karon Police Station when they arrived at the scene.

Only one type of news about them is good, relatively rare here though see every now and then.

More common north of black sea.

Is pepper spray legal in Thailand?......might get me some.

Now this is the type of incident that deserves prison in my opinion. This man is clearly a danger to others and should not be free to roam the streets.

I visited Phuket several months ago after not having been there in about 10 years, and I was astonished at how low the quality of the tourists and expats were. A lot of Russians, a lot of Arabs, a lot of Indians, very, very few Europeans or Westerners. Any place that has about 40% or 50% Russian tourists is going to be a place that is difficult to have a good time. These are not nice people, these are not polite people, these are rough people with a Cossack background, who come from a very uncivilized nation.

As far as this guy goes anytime at anyone attacks a policeman he should be locked up. Perhaps there should be a mandatory prison sentence for this kind of ridiculous behavior.

The usual punishment for those of Russian nationality appears to be a 500 baht fine, eg the period raged Russian lady who kicked a 7-11 employee. Contrasted with the Swiss idiot who was held up to national humiliation and deported (I believe) for kicking someone.

Likely the two Russians referenced in the article will apologize and get a small fine. But I doubt we will ever hear about it

How stupid do you have to be to evade being drafted and then getting expelled from your safe refuge? I guess the Russians (Turgenev} really did conceive the notion of nihilism. In the land of karma the wheel spins for this raschist.

Talks must be underway or ever closer to getting back to the 30 days on arrival for those powerful Russian passports ! 😉

Certainly the number of west European tourists is very low.

Apart from what I see with my own eyes when around and about, I recently flew from London with Ettihad. The London - Abu Dhabi leg was ram packed. The Abu Dhabi - Phuket leg was 10% full, if that.

So wherever those people on the Londo flight were going, it certainly wasn’t Phuket.

I wonder when the Thais will decide that it's time to scale back the low-margin mass-tourism industry and start thinking of better ways to make a living?

Has the Swiss Doctor kicker been deported? It all went quiet about him. Maybe his money is talking.

could be PTSD?  we dont know what kind of pressures he has been under...or withdrawal..it's a bit much to put local plod in front of a menacing threat like this.

Perhaps they should have a swat team made up of thai kick boxers properly trained and equipped in all tourist hot spots.

Yes. This kind of thing seems to be getting worse in Thailand. But it is very difficult to convince our readers that Russian society has been conditioned by barbarism for more than a century of repression. The Russians have produced terrific writers - fairly widely read - but the average Russian today prefers knee-jerk chauvinism and reliance on their own tightly controlled media. I feel sure Thailand can expect more of this kind of trouble, especially where Thai cops have little knowledge of Russian history.

Rabid Russian?

I'll need a rabies booster then...

Assault a pregnant woman... 500 baht... assault police and I think it might "cost" a bit more... hopefully his Thai visitation privileges, and I one-way back to Putin's place.

"- wearing nothing but summer trunks" ! Reminds me of a cartoon by the late Bill Tidy.

Unfortunately, Russians share many facial characteristics with other western visitors. This must be a source of constant confusion with most European visitors to Thailand. Culturally, Russians are miles apart from most European visitors and have a chronic history of repression and a violence which reverberates amongst their lesser educated arrivals.  I feel sorry for Thai cops who have to work amidst such contrastive cultural backgrounds - we all look so similar, but that is not the case.

It bothers me that you generalize about foreigners (that was the typical Russian - either they are deserters or drunks who come to Thailand). I would ask you to talk about RUSSIANS or INDIAN victims (they are always robbed) Thank you for not generalizing

Whilst appreciating the attempt at alliteration, the word rabid is hardly appropriate.
