I've started experimenting with Skype this week but calls to landlines/mobiles are pricey. It's great if someone else is on skype, then it's free and very clear as if you're in the same room.

Now I'm being turned on to Voip which offers free calls to landlines and mobiles in Thailand and USA and Canada. All this is regardless of whether they're also Voip customers.

Voip and skype also have an option where you can buy a local # from various western countries (USA for example) and when people call that #, it rings in Thailand or wherever you are.

I'm sure there's a catch whereupon you get some free but then you have to pay normal rates.

Has anyone experimented with either or both services? Thank you.

So far, my money is on Voip. You can make free calls right now from the homepage:

http://www.voipdiscount.com/en/index.html

alternatively, there's skype: http://skype.com/intl/en/

Thanks.

Thanks for the information about Voip

The link you gave actually answers your question!

Quote from the site:

Buying credit entitles you to 120 Freedays (unless stated otherwise). This means you can call all countries marked as "Free" in our rates list for a period of 120 days at no costs. When the 120 days are over, the normal rate will be charged for these destinations. You can get more Freedays by topping up your account with credit.

I use voipbuster since almost one year and i am very happy about the quality and. I even use it to call landlines in my own country because it is free.

When calling a Thai mobile from Belgium, it cost me less than 10 baths/minutes, a Malaysian mobile cost 4 baths /minute....

And the quality is great

there is no catch - you have 300 minutes weekly free and more minutes for a small charge (still lower than skype).

but a private number as well as diversions do cost - you are paying for the convenience
