I don't think that there are too many 'Buts'. Nearly 50% of Canadian manufacturing output goes to the US. A trade war will have serious consequences for the Canadian economy. That said, this is no way justifies Trump's tariff policy. Firstly, it is bullying protectionism; no more, no less. The claim that US exporters are victims of unfair competition has little, if any, validity. For example, in the case of Europe safety regulations, etc. apply equally to domestic producers. Perhaps, more importantly, the policy hasn't had the desired effect: There has been no major re-location of manufacturing to the US and the imposition of (reciprocal) tariffs has done nothing more than push up inflation worldwide. Trump appears to have taken on another of the Brexiters' favourite mantras: This will hurt you more than it hurts us; ignoring the fact that the pain can be avoided completely.
