Popular Post snoop1130
New Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has said he's not bothered by rumors that ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra has been in talks with representatives of Myanmar’s opposition groups. According to Maris, Thaksin operated in a personal capacity when he met with Myanmar rebel groups battling the military junta. “If Myanmar’s opposition groups want Thaksin's help, it's their choice. His talks with the Burmese are not linked to the Thai government. I only became aware of this from news reports and don't have full details," he said. VOA Myanmar reported that Thaksin, who is out on parole, had clandestine meetings with Myanmar's rebels in Chiang Mai's northern province and in Bangkok during the last two months. Maris, who has been an ambassador in the past, succeeded Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara. Parnpree stepped down without giving a specific reason, simply stating he wanted to maintain his principles. Some political analysts speculate that Parnpree's resignation may be related to Thaksin's supposed meddling in foreign affairs. Maris reiterated that Thailand's position is to promote peace and dialogue in Myanmar, a neighboring country. "If this conflict persists, Thailand, who shares a border with Myanmar, could face problems," he said. He also added that Thailand would keep providing humanitarian aid to Myanmar as part of the ASEAN group's framework. For someone on parole Thaksin seems to have a lot of freedom? 2 1 1
