The Putin apologists and supporters club will be in their element with the news of a Trump leadership after his promise to end the conflict in 24 hours. They revel in the though of Ukraine being subjected to further Russian occupation despite the war crimes carried out to get those gains.

 

Without doubt its a setback for Ukraine but its pointless speculating until Trump comes up with a solid plan that is agreed and implemented, until then all articles are pure speculation.

Maybe worth watching out for. These North Korean soldiers have red tape on the butts of their guns. Both Russian and Ukrainian troops use identifying coloured tape - but it's usually on their uniforms & helmets.

At this stage with no hope of victory a messy peace is preferable to a continuing dirty war with a disproportinate loss of life on the Ukrainian side. Let's hope that Trump follows through and gets that deal across the line and soon. Europe is very nearly bust and with the engine of Germany stalling there's no money left to make up a US shortfall should it happen nor the weapons or manpower either. This is the only glimmer of hope in a Trump victory - the rest is a disaster for the world.

Russia steps up mass drone attacks in bid to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses - CNN

 As well as drastically increasing the number of strikes, Russia has begun to fire decoy drones without warheads to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses. Decoy drones carry a “3D-printed ball wrapped in foil” to imitate the warhead of an Iran-made Shahed-136 drone, Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s air defenses, told CNN.

These cheaper drones confuse Ukraine’s air defenses, which may shoot down decoy drones instead of ones carrying a lethal warhead. Decoy drones now account for as many as half of all Russian drones fired at Ukraine, Ihnat said.

The Russian army has been pounding Ukraine throughout the war, but the moves signal a change in Moscow’s tactics following Donald Trump’s reelection as president, who could pull support. Meanwhile, Ukraine is under fierce pressure on the eastern frontlines, where its army chief has warned his forces are facing “one of the most powerful Russian offensives” since the start of the war.

 When it became clear earlier this year that Trump would definitely secure his party’s nomination, there was some flirting in Europe with the thought that the continent must step up and take over the funding and support for Ukraine when the US abandons Zelensky and his people. Those of us who suggested this did so on the basis it should surely be feasible for a continent of 500 million souls, with an economy ten times the size of Russia’s, to find the money and also to strengthen the European pillar of Nato. Beyond some statements since Trump’s victory about European solidarity, there is no meaningful sign of it.

I hope I am wrong. I hope Europe, including the UK, steps up properly for Ukraine and commits to spending at least 3 per cent of GDP on rebuilding our own defences. As it stands, what seems more likely is that we will wring our hands while Ukraine is forced to endure ritual humiliation.

The UK is currently spending approximately 2.3% of its GDP on defense. There is a commitment to increase this to 2.5% of GDP by 2030.

 

To calculate 0.7% of the UK's GDP, we need the current GDP figure.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the UK's GDP in 2023 was £2,720 billion.  

To find 0.7% of this amount, we can multiply the GDP by 0.7% (or 0.007):

£2,720 billion * 0.007 = £19.04 billion

Therefore, 0.7% of the UK's GDP in 2023 was approximately £19.04 billion.

 

That would be nearly £700 more per household per year.

Perhaps the best thing to come out of Trump's victory is that we won't have to look at that moron Blinken running around the M E achieving nothing but lies and BS after January 20th.

Populism is on the rise even more so since the Trump win Orban and Fico are in virtal open rebellion and Germany fears an AfD resurgence , same with Austria. We are at the beginning of the end.

The EEC was a good idea for Europe. The political and monetary union has been a disaster. Sooner it goes back to an EEC the better.
