Hi guys, I was just wondering about the advantages of changing from safari to the firefox web browser. I know that it will mean that I can post Thai on this site but are there any disadvantages? Can I keep both safari and Firefox on my mac? How do I do it?

Yes you can run both just download firefox and install it into the applications directory.

I mainly use Safari 3 beta because its just a lot faster and works with nearly all the websites i visit and for those few that don't just fire up firefox.

No issues with running both on the same Mac

I mainly use Safari, but certain websites don't work fully (i.e. truevisions TV schedule). So I have both Safari and Firefox installed. As you will know, on a mac you can see all your current pages on screen at the same time if you want to, so it's really easy to switch browsers.

There is another browser called 'camino' which is pretty good too.

Firefox is a bit ugly for a Mac app, but it's far less quirky than Safari 3. Safari 3 is pretty, has some nice features, unrivaled bookmarks organizer but it's also prone to using lots of memory - just checked it's currently at 200MB, but I have seen it gobble up 450MB - main memory, not virtual! I mean, <deleted>?? Of course it's beta so they'll probably unkink it for the final release.

Firefox 3 should be a huge improvement.

And thanks for the reminder, I am going to go check out Camino. I know the guy has switched to using the Mozilla (e.g. Firefox) rendering engine so this could be the best of both worlds.

I am using safari 3 and firefox 2. I seem to have a problem that a lot of thai language sites are unreadable in firefox. Google displays the language ok but when you visit the page itself it displays garbage (this is mostly using a microsoft thai font). The same page will be readable in safari, but not all the forum stuff works...

(this is annoying my wife! :o )

If Firefox or Safari display garbage, I taught my wife to go to View -> Text Encoding and set it to Thai (Windows, DOS). That usually works even with the most horrific forums. And I am trying very hard here to not make a comment on Thai web design...

PS: Using Camino to post this - it's like a prettified Firefox and seems very fast. Worth a try!

yeah, can display the site in Thai, but the poor coding won't open threads in safari...

have a look at :

http://www.weddingsquare.com/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=38

try and open a thread... Firefox will open them but will display garbage on the page (no (windows, dos) option and no use on the others) - but its tabs display the text fine. Safari is fine for the index but just opens a blank page (it looks like the request terminates early as there is nothing in the page source) Please help if I have missed something!

a thai language alternative to thai visa might be the answer, any suggestions? :o

Camino is my choice. Much better than Safari for financial websites and more attractive as its appearance can be modified. Based on Firefox core and reads your Safari bookmarks. Give it a try and I doubt you will use Safari any more than I do, never.

I just tried this link:

- Camino - works fine

- Firefox - works fine

- Safari - doesn't work.

In Safari, you can fix the main page by manually selecting Thai encoding, but clicking on threads yields an empty page. I filed a bug with Apple.

If you like to tweak the appearance you should take a look at CaminIcon.
