June 2023 set a new record as the hottest month, marking a full year of temperatures consistently 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. This troubling trend highlights the severe challenge climate change poses to the planet, despite global efforts to curb it.

 

The past year has seen an average global temperature 1.64C higher than the pre-industrial average and 0.76C above the 1991-2020 average. These figures, while distressing, do not yet indicate a permanent breach of the warming threshold set by the Paris Agreement. The temporary influence of the El Niño weather phenomenon may cause future temperature reductions. However, the persistent data trend underscores ongoing and significant changes in the Earth's climate.

 

Carlo Buontempo, director of Copernicus, emphasized that the continuous rise in temperatures is more than a statistical anomaly, illustrating a significant and ongoing shift in our climate. He warned that unless we stop adding greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and oceans, breaking temperature records will become inevitable. This warning comes amidst a prolonged heatwave in the United States, impacting 130 million people and causing dangerously high temperatures.

 

Dr. Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London's Grantham Institute, noted a high probability that 2024 could surpass 2023 as the hottest year on record. She pointed out that while El Niño is a naturally recurring phenomenon that cannot be prevented, the continued burning of fossil fuels—oil, gas, and coal—can and must be stopped to combat climate change.

 

The monthly data release from Copernicus also confirmed that last month was the hottest June on record, marking the 13th consecutive month as the hottest since records began. Despite the global average smoothing out temperature extremes, some regions still experienced cool conditions. For example, parts of Turkey had above-average temperatures in June, while the western parts of Europe experienced temperatures at or below average.

 

The persistent rise in global temperatures over the past twelve months highlights the urgency of addressing climate change. The devastating consequences of this changed climate have been felt worldwide, with heatwaves claiming lives in India, Saudi Arabia, Gaza, and the United States, and wildfires forcing tourist evacuations in Greece. These events underscore the critical need for global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent further warming.

 

The Copernicus data indicates that every month since July 2023 has had an average temperature 1.5C hotter than the fossil fuel era. Limiting warming to no more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels is seen as crucial to avoid more severe impacts of climate change, a target enshrined in the landmark Paris Agreement. However, over the last twelve months, the global average temperature has been 1.64C above the pre-industrial average and 0.76C above the 1991-2020 average, according to Copernicus.

 

These findings highlight "continuing" changes to the planet's climate, according to Copernicus's director Carlo Buontempo. He stated, "This is more than a statistical oddity, and it highlights a large and continuing shift in our climate." Buontempo further emphasized that it is "inevitable" temperature records will be broken repeatedly unless greenhouse gas emissions are curtailed.

 

The current data from Copernicus highlights the severe and ongoing impacts of climate change. The prolonged heatwave in the United States, which has shattered records with dangerously high temperatures, is just one example of the devastating consequences being felt around the world. It's like a scientist warning about an incoming asteroid, but who has no clue how to stop it. Therefore, the scientist shouldn't tell anyone.

 

Perhaps things are different in New Zealand, but in the rest of the world there are scientists who monitor weather and climate, and other scientists who focus on mitigating global warming.

Hmmm.  Wonder how this compares to the 1930s and why that decade is never mentioned in these "record" temperatures as that decade was (in)famously hot.   The periods selected here seem to be "pre-industrial" (which I assume to be pre 1850) and 1991-2020.  Seems very selective to me.  Wonder why?

There was a very short temperature spike in the 1930s.

 

There was no associated long term warming trend, as is the case now. Scientists are more concerned about the trend, not so much the current record temperatures.

Yeah so what, the climate is changing, show uncorrelated non-presumptive proof that human activity is the cause. You can’t, because there is none. These silly grafts don’t show or prove anything along with the incoming links.

Flat earthers believe the earth is flat despite the overwhelming evidence that the earth is not flat.  Those that are skeptical of "man made" global warming are skeptical due the underwhelming evidence that climate change is caused by human activities and isn't due to a great ball of fire that is 1.3 million times the size of earth, and struggle to understand how exporting emissions from the UK to India or China (at great expense) is somehow going to solve the problem.

Interesting graph. What does the 100 years look like before 1880? Oh and by the way, are all those temperatures after 1980 actually from meteorological stations or are some of them guesstimates since some of those stations are not in operation anymore. Of course we all know that thermometers in the cities do not give the proper results. Where are these thermometers located?

Because they massaged the numbers to show more warming. Every old person says it was hotter in the 1930s and 1940s.
