Actually, you could build a simple 2/3 bed house for about 750,000 Baht. In rural areas. Well below 47,000 GBP.  Though I'm not sure how simple a 6 bed house you could get for 47,000 GBP which is about 2.2 million baht at current exchange rates.

Try dividing 800,000 by 47 and see if you can make it equal 1/2 million anything.

Nine million baht is not such a lot if right at the get go you need a 6 bedroomed house. Cost of living in Thailand is not what it was.

But 99% not in Nakhon Nowhere, where her family comes from. Maybe he can work as an English Teacher for 20k THB in the local school, but that’s it 😂 If he would be smart enough being able to work remote online with a decent income , they surely would already have moved to Thailand long ago.

On the US gambling winnings are taxable. People who win those huge lotteries pay income tax. 

If you hit more than 1199 dollars on the pokies the machine locks up and a slot attendant comes out for you to show ID and sign an IRS  form or else they take 30 percent off the top. You submit this with your income tax return.

 

You can actually deduct gambling winnings up to the amount of your losses, Im told

Well looks like we BOTH made a mistake he only needs 400k for a marriage extension, and you try getting 47 baht for 1 GBP come to that.

I know a British guy who sold up and came with his Thai wife to retire here, 2 years before he was due to collect his state pension. He had 250K GBP from the sale of his house when he arrived. This was 3 years ago. He now has less than 150K GBP. I wonder just how long that will last before he has no other option than to return to the UK penny less. He had already built a house some years ago. 

 

So OK these people can build their house for 47,000GBP Maybe buy themselves a nice new Pickup or sedan. But Just how long will 9 million baht last.   

 

I guess it's horses for courses! And the type of lifestyle one hope to have.

I'm not sure at 40 years of age he could apply for a 1 year Non O visa based on Marriage? Thought you had to be at least 55 years of age! And the current exchange rate mid market is 46.96 Baht to 1 GBP.

You thought wrong no matter what age you are if your married to a Thai you can get a marriage extension, and the age for retirement Extension is 50. Depending whether they married here or in the UK, if in the UK then he/they will have to register their wedding here. If they married here then easy peasy.
