US authorities recently obtained intelligence from a human source indicating a plot by Iran to assassinate Donald Trump. This led the Secret Service to ramp up security around the former president, according to multiple sources briefed on the matter. Despite this threat, there is no known connection between this plot and Thomas Matthew Crooks, the individual who attempted to assassinate Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.

The intelligence threat from a hostile foreign agency, coupled with the enhanced security measures for Trump, raises questions about the security lapses at the Pennsylvania rally. A 20-year-old man managed to access a nearby rooftop and fire shots that injured the former president. A US national security official confirmed that both the Secret Service and the Trump campaign were informed of the threat before the rally.

"Secret Service learned of the increased threat from this threat stream," the official told CNN. "NSC directly contacted USSS at a senior level to ensure they continued to track the latest reporting. USSS shared this information with the detail lead, and the Trump campaign was made aware of an evolving threat. In response to the increased threat, Secret Service surged resources and assets for the protection of former President Trump. All of this was in advance of Saturday."

The Trump campaign did not confirm whether it was aware of the Iranian threat. "We do not comment on President Trump’s security detail. All questions should be directed to The United States Secret Service," the campaign stated.

Secret Service officials have repeatedly warned the Trump campaign against holding outdoor rallies due to the greater risks compared to controlled-access events. These warnings have been general in nature but are part of the agency's continuous effort to adjust resources in response to potential threats.

"The Secret Service and other agencies are constantly receiving new potential threat information and taking action to adjust resources, as needed," Anthony Guglielmi, an agency spokesman, said. "We cannot comment on any specific threat stream, other than to say that the Secret Service takes threats seriously and responds accordingly."

The FBI, which is investigating Saturday’s shooting, declined to comment on the matter. NSC spokesperson Adrienne Watson stated that there is no known link between shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks and any other individuals at this time. "The investigation of Saturday’s attempted assassination of former President Trump is active and ongoing. At this time, law enforcement has reported that their investigation has not identified ties between the shooter and any accomplice or co-conspirator, foreign or domestic," Watson said.

The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations denied any plot to assassinate Trump. "These accusations are unsubstantiated and malicious. From the perspective of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Trump is a criminal who must be prosecuted and punished in a court of law for ordering the assassination of General Soleimani. Iran has chosen the legal path to bring him to justice," a spokesperson for the mission told CNN.

Trump and the Republican vice presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, are set to hold their first official campaign rally together on Saturday at an indoor arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Iran has repeatedly vowed revenge for the US military’s killing of Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Iranian military’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, in January 2020. Former senior Trump administration officials involved in national security have had tight security since leaving the government. In August 2022, the Justice Department charged a member of the IRGC with attempting to orchestrate the assassination of John Bolton, Trump's former national security adviser. The plot against Bolton was believed to be retaliation for Soleimani's assassination. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was also targeted by an Iranian assassination plot, according to sources.

Trump’s former national security adviser, Robert O’Brien, who had a US government security detail due to threats from Iran, is now paying for his own private security after his detail was dropped last summer. Bolton, however, still has his Secret Service detail.

For months, law enforcement officials have been concerned about the persistent threat from Iran against former Trump officials and Trump himself. The recent intelligence indicated a significant increase in this threat, coinciding with a surge in online messaging from Iranian accounts and state-backed media mentioning Trump, raising security concerns among US officials.

There is a not-so-hidden irony in this tale (besides some truly incompetent SS agents).

The clown judge in FL threw out the stolen documents case, where the stolen documents included some classified HCS (Human Clandestine Sources). While the possible Iran plot to get the felon could have been from SIGINT sources, it's quite possible it came from HUMINT. News of the dismissal of the case where the felon was reckless and cavalier with, inter alia, HCS docs sends a chill to clandestine assets and potential assets around the world, as exposure of their identities (as HCS docs would) puts both the asset and their families under threat. Iran hangs spies. Putin feeds them into a furnace alive while their wife and children watch and listen to dad's screams.

Guaranteed the agency is going to lose existing clandestine assets and potential ones because of what the felon did and how the clown judge tossed the case out. The next Iranian plot to get him might not be discovered, leaving an already-incompetent Secret Service in a deeper hole.

Also, case officers are human. There is outrage over the dismissal of the case. It's even possible that the next field operative who comes across such intel will decide to take some built-up leave and never report the intel.

(The implications of the stolen docs dismissal are much more serious, as a good deal of valuable intel also comes from liaison contacts with friendly foreign intel services. They will stop sharing, fearing exposure of their own sources, such as when Israel lost a penetration of ISIS because the felon mouthed off to FM Lavrov and Ambassador Kislyak in the Oval Office. The US will get less intel about terrorist plots, black market fissionable material being peddled, suitcase nukes from the old USSR being sold, plus the usual things about foreign military capabilities and all the usual kind of intel that impacts US defense policy, spending, weapons development, etc.

If and when a dirty bomb goes off in London, Paris or New York, or al Qaeda biochemists release a biopathogen that wipes out millions, it is possible a clandestine asset who never was could have helped prevent this. So be it.

Should be easy for Iran. Just get a spotty teenager to climb onto a roof with a rifle 150 yards from Trump, in full view of crowds who are pointing out the gunman to authorities and filming it with their phones. Leave him there for 20 minutes to prepare.

No rush. The secret service won't do anything until the shot has been fired anyway.  😃

If that was "increased security", I'd hate to see what regular old security looks like.

Anyone wanna bet that RFK Jr is surrounded by a bunch of lady agents today?   I mean, they can't fire them and still maintain the Director's DEI goal, so they have to assign them somewhere.

They will make another attempt, just disseminating propaganda to blame Iran. Now they’re scared and have to finish the job, otherwise Trump is going to go after every single one of them, down to the last pea-on in the CIA.

Trump needs a private security apparatus, in close proximity and to review, spot and validate the SS contingencies. Because the SS definitely has got some rats coming from the top or another agency.

Reality check if your false premise was true it would have been handled in a far more professional manner, not by some weird kid with no training in the open on camera surrounded by trumpers that’s just stupid but I guess it serves some need in you or you are directed to say such an obvious conspiracy theory meh….🫤

More astonishing ignorance. The weird kid made up to the roof where a security team was detailed to be stationed at, though the security team was redirected to a 2nd story window elsewhere. Only the weak minded lack questions and resort to pacification of naming as conspiracies.

In any case, this article is dated given the fact that Iran had put an assassination threat on Trump long time ago.

They should start by informing the DEI hire that she is supposed to dive in front/on top of Trump to protect him, not cower behind him.

Apparently Nixon wouldn't accept SS protection. He didn't trust them. There are many questions not being answered since the assassination attempt. And some ridiculous answers from the SS head. Like the roof was too slanted to post agents up there! Was there a second shooter? There were apparently shots from three different rifles! What is the location of the people that were shot and the bullet trajectories? I didn't notice any shell casings on that roof but they were happy to show the phone and the other device. Why were they hosing down the roof? Cleaning it or getting rid of evidence? Too many unanswered questions. It's an inside job and we're seeing a cover-up.
