I presume you are filing a tax return in Thailand, and have for 20 years. But.... You don't work in Thailand, and Remittances haven't been taxable until now, and Therefore, the only reason to file a tax return is because you are receiving interest in a bank account sufficient to warrant filing a tax return to try to get a refund. Most people are not in that situation. -

I don't think it is likely that the TRD will seek to tax undistributed income within US IRA and 401k accounts, although I don't think there is anything in the US-Thai DTA that expressly precludes it. I think it is technically a possibility, but I don't see it as likely. But who knows? I tend not to underestimate the capabilities of the TRD if they want your money, Somchai or not. I have heard people who have been audited say that the Thai tax net isn't very wide, but it is very deep. I think that the TRD has the ability to obtain transaction data from the BoT with respect to inward foreign remittances. Somchai won't find anything, but the TRD computers might. But I don't think the TRD has the resources or perhaps the political will now to chase bargirls upcountry with foreign remittances. -

@GinBoy2 Hey, can you clarify a couple things re your comment above? --When you say "emergency" coverage, I'm assuming that means for things like accidents and such? Not that you go to the doctor for tests and find out you have cancer, right? --Is the $500,000 a lifetime policy cap for that coverage, and did you really mean $500K? That seems very high. I've seen other mentions of Medicare Advantage overseas coverage that talked about a $50,000 maximum overseas benefit. -

About the high class hotels
Yes I love that ozbargain forum , unfortunately I'm banned from posting though , but $372 a year membership to Accor is a bit steep I have a Qantas premium credit card I will look on their website I won't be paying big money to stay in a hotel though unless I'm treated like royalty -

Did you read his OP? He's not visiting family, he is visiting his girlfriend which has a son that he calls his step-son. He could also call his girlfriend his wife, doesn't make it so. To Thai immigration a girlfriend and her son not his is irrelevant to a visa exempt tourist entry. Only his story is making it seem so important to IO that they would actually face-time her 😆- 1

From time to time Accor memberships are on good specials, if you get one with free nights it could be very good value for money to experience 5 star hotels. In the past I stayed in Sofitel Sukhumvit for around 4500 p/n, the rooms were going on Agoda 8-9k p/n.
