A woman suffered injuries after a large steel plate crashed through her car windshield, slicing her cheek and neck while she was driving on an elevated motorway.

The unsettling occurrence unfolded near the 19 kilometre mark on the Bangkok-bound side of the Burapha Withi expressway in the Bangphli district's Bang Chalong area around 6pm on Sunday.

When police and emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found Pranee Rungsuksai bleeding from her neck and cheek with her car stopped on Thepharat Road under the elevated motorway.

First-aid was immediately provided to the 52-year-old woman who had received slash wounds to her right cheek and neck before she was taken to a nearby hospital.

Upon inspection, police discovered a hole on the driver's side of the windshield of her white Toyota. A steel plate measuring about 13 centimetres in width and length, and 2.5cm in thickness was found inside the car.

Ms Pranee was driving on the motorway heading to Bangkok to pick up her daughter. She entered the expressway through the Bang Bo toll plaza and was driving in the middle lane with two pickup trucks running in front and to the right side of her car.

Without warning, the steel plate hurtled into the right part of her windscreen and sliced her right cheek and neck.

Shaken and in pain, Ms Pranee tried to remain calm, exited the motorway, made a U-turn and parked her car, where she then waited for assistance.

Ms Pranee recounted that her car had been previously hit by stones but regarded herself fortunate in this instance that the metal plate did not strike her directly in the face.

Too many open pickups full of junk permitted on the expressways...

Only fully covered vehicles are permitted on expressways - but we all know that regulations and laws mean nothing in Thailand anyway...   A very lucky lady...

I hope CCTV can track down the vehicle from which this metal 'litter' originated.

I know someone who'd hit a bag of cement which had fallen off a truck or pickup - it completely trashed the front end of their car.
